Recommendations: looking for a hotel in Jan for quiet 40th celebration, log fires etc but virtually non-existent budget

I am hoping to go away to celebrate my upcoming 40th with DH, just overnight. We have no passports and pretty much no money, but could probably stretch to a night away somewhere cheapish and a meal.

Can anyone recommend somewhere, probably in SW (Devon/Somerset) or within cheap UK flight from that area?

I have visions of sitting in front of a crackling log fire, drinking a strong red wine after eating too much and looking out of the window at a lovely winter country scene,with the 4 poster bed stuffed high with pillows in the background. (OK so we probably can't afford that, but just to set the scene I have in my mind). Somewhere with it's own restaurant would be ideal. Pub-style places most likely given the budget I expect.

All ideas welcome!

I don't think it's the poshest but there might be options at the White Horse Exmoor here

It's not quite the area, but I've always thought Burngate Farm Bed and Breakfast near Lulworth, looked worth a go.

Thanks for the suggestions. Toad Hall looks lovely but is self-catering - and that's one night I don't want to be cooking!

Ashley House does look nice but I think somewhere with a restaurant and a bit more 'country style' is what I'm after.

The Alistair Sawday website looks good - I'll have a browse!

White Horse I have already looked at, it is perfect but too expensive

I think Lulworth might be a bit too far but it does look nice.

Hill House B&B

It has the log fires, four poster beds, deep duvets, lovely wine, a fabulous multi-course evening meal for about £22, a breakfast so large it really will keep you going all day, a sauna, a hot tub with views, and a slightly eccentric host.

Go on secret escapes, they have some great deals

Rye is lovely - The Mermaid Inn has log fires & four posters & they have some good deals but it might be a bit far for you.

We stayed here after Xmas last year. It was LOVELY. Log fires, comfy rooms and gorgeous food. Due to flooding we actually had to cancel a planned outing and got stranded there all day. In front of the fire, with wine, wifi, newspapers and food all provided without having to move from the spot whilst it tipped it down outside. It was heavenly.

Ooooh the Holcombe Inn looks amazing!! The bath in the bedroom....what bliss!

I really could not recommend it highly enough! I have stayed in posh hotels that don't offer that level of service. And it is just a pub with rooms at the end of the day. There are about 6 or 7 choices for breakfast plus cereal and toast etc, full breakfast, pancakes....The food was lovely and at pub prices really. We stayed for 3 nights, went to Bath for the day, got stranded instead of going to Cheddar Gorge/Wookey Hole. They have a lovely "snug" with fireplace and comfy sofas.

Staff were all really friendly. Nothing too much trouble. And you get a proper cafetiere in the room with jars of fresh coffee rather than 2 or 3 of those blinking sachets.
