Places to visit in and around Oxford.

We are visiting Oxford for half term, looking for places to visit cheapish or free, ds 7 dd's 5 and 2. Staying just outside for four nights. Thank you.

Pitt Rivers and Natural History Museums. Adjoining buildings in the centre of Oxford. Dinosaurs, dodos, Egyptian mummies and shrunken heads. Usually have children's activities in the school holidays.

Not entirely free as you'll need money for cake and coffee, but a nice place to visit.

Look a good as well thanks, there is always budget for cake !

Ashmolean is also free (well, suggested donation) and they usually have children's art activities in the holidays. University Parks is also good for a walk and feeding ducks, and there are a few other nice parks on the outskirts of Oxford too - Hinksey, Florence and Cutteslowe. The Covered Market is also quite interesting to walk through - lots to see. I can't think of many other free places (sorry!) but my children loved doing an open-top bus tour of Oxford when they were young.

a walk alogn the river at port meadow is lovely

waddesdon manor is fab if you have national trust membership - has a good playground for kids

barefoot books in summertown sometimes has free kids activities on in the hols, check their website

millets farm is good value if you are that side of oxford

farm shop at crazy bear has kids play area by car park (free) and coffee and cake in the shop

other nice towns to visit which are not too far: marlow (river walks and fab playground by river), old amersham (antiques shops), wallingford (river walks), tring - my kids love walking by the canal and opening all the locks for the boats (park near tring reservoirs not in the town), also tring has a free museum (offshoot of nat hist museum)

Presumably you'll want to visit a couple of the colleges? Christchurch and Magdalen are stunning and bits of both of them featured in the Harry Potter films.

Wittenham clumps (nr Didcot)a nice walk.
Agree that Pitt Rivers worth a visit . Activities for kids went down very well with DS(7).

Right it looks as if it going to be a grim week weather wise so best indoor activities in and around Oxford please.,Have pool at hotel,so that's a start.
