Where is a good and safe place to live close to the sea

Hello all,

Just joined up as need some advice, me and my partner have decided we want to move away with our 2 boys from Bedfordshire and live somewhere close by the sea, my other half is from NZ and misses the beach lifestyle, I mainly want somewhere with a good community and good schools and low crime.. We were looking at Devon until everybody has put that aparantley they don't welcome new comers to the county...

But any opinions would be great, we don't mind moving north or south just somewhere different :-)

It is a very welcoming place, there are good bits and bad bits.

come and have a look, we have a lot of beach life, and the surf is good.

That's what I was really shocked reading as I've always thought Devon was fab and I have family in Somerset who say its lovely and my partner loves surfing, but I've read on here people have moved back after a year because the Devon people were rude and only accept locals... Which I didn't believe which is why I have joined to get other opinions :-)

I lived in Watchet Somerset for a bit & thought it was heaven! Blue Anchor bay was beautiful the local people were warm & friendly (we lived in a pub) I'd loveto go back to see what it's like now (hopefully unchanged)

Have you considered Northern Ireland ? Some lovely coast and crime rate is actually low (ignore the silly flag and marching squabbles they are confined to really small areas which are easily avoided :)

Bangor or anywhere along north down coast is particularly nice !

I live in Devon and its not like that at all! Please don't be put off, it's a wonderful place to live. I'm originally from the midlands so I'm one of the 'newcomers' myself (been here 13 years), tbh I can't think of anyone I know that's originally from Devon, we've ALL moved here so forget the locals, we outnumber them anyway

Weymouth. Portland good for water sports, lots of unspoilt beaches nearby, no problem with outsiders ( I was one myself a few years ago). Lots of good primary schools, 2 outstanding secondaries. Only problem is, it takes ages to get anywhere: London nearly three hours on the train.

And snowfedup no I hadn't actually considered northern island, but I think we want to stay in England so we are still close to my family :-)
Purple monster that's great to hear, that's lifted me back up now towards Devon as was really disappointed to read that stuff, but never believe everything you read eh :-D

I am a Devonshire dumpling and might be biased but think we are very welcoming. Only time we might grumble a bit is when all the roads are gridlocked on changeover day in the summer. Look at Exmouth, Sidmouth and Budleigh. North devon is beautiful too and good if you want to surf.

good friend of mine is from NZ and says Wales is very much like NZ. We live in a lovely area (Gower) and there's a very strong beach and surf/surf lifesaving culture lifestyle. Come visit and see!
