Torquay - anyone recommend anywhere to stay to things to do?

Torquay has been recommended, never been and have the chance to stay 3 nights with DS age 8 - can you recommend where to stay and places to go?

Places to go:
Paignton Zoo (baby orangutan at the moment!) and Living Coasts aquarium/ zoo in Torquay (you can get a joint ticket for both)
There are steam trains and ferries galore round here if you like that kind of thing - there is even a round robin deal with train/boat/bus
Around Babbacombe on the edge of Torquay there is a model village; Kents Cavern (caves - reasonably interesting) and Bygones - an Olde Worlde Museum.
Torquay museum has pirate exhibitions and last year had Star Wars Storm troopers on the door (you have to pay and I have not been in yet)
Dartmouth is very pretty - but perhaps not so exciting for an 8 year old boy.
You could get the ferry from Torquay to Brixham and visit the pirate museum there and the pretend Cutty Sark (I think it is)
Lots of beaches - and lots of cliffs to walk up and down to get to most of the beaches (apart from Torre right on Torquay harbour and Paignton)

I can't advise on where to stay as I live here but hope that gives some ideas of what to do

Babbacombe also has a cliff railway which leads to a short coastal walk between beaches and past small waterfalls. Is lovely.

We've just been to Paignton, not far from Torquay. We stayed at Hoburne holiday park. It was fantastic. There's a fun water slide park nearby which all my dc loved.

fluffy I'm very jealous. I want to move to the area because we loved it so much. We spent the day in Torquay.

Well it is mid season so will be fairly pricey. Mind you, I didn't pay much more than that for a week for 6 of us. There's lots of sites nearby, waterside and Beverly holiday park (think that's the right name). No idea what they are like though.

How about camping instead?

We have stayed here www.lincombehallhotel.co.uk/ before now and its not as stuffy and posh as you may be worried it is (I was before we went).

They are lovely with children and the food is excellent. We have stayed here 3 times now.

Its walkable (downhill) in about 5 to 10 minutes to the harbour in Torquay. It really is a lovely place to stay. They some times have offers on so call them if you cannot see anything on the website.

Forgot to say that they have special rates for kids and if you are on abudget the standard rooms are lovely - there is no need to upgrade unless you want to.

best day out in torquay is cockington court.

My cockington court day - take a picnic for the green, have a look at the glass blowing, play in the special/clever multi sensory sn friendly play area out back, wander round the woodland/lake walks and tea and scones on the tea gardens in the village. The tea gardena are so quaint and old fashioned it's almost surreal, especially if the piano player is playing. there's a horse drawn carriage ride ive done once, expensive but fantastic.
