Isle of Skye

We're thinking if heading here this summer with two DSs in tow. They're five and three.

Any ideas, suggestions, recommendations? Is there enough to do for a week? We like to do an "excursion" I've turned into my mum every day.

Want pretty decent accommodation too - anyone been?

We stayed right on the southern tip: fabulous cottage, but it's not the best location if you want to do lots of excursions - Skye is quite big and it's a lot of driving if you want to go places.

We just went to get away from it all, and from the cottage could scramble down to the rockpools, or go for walks to an idyllic secluded cove.

Serpentarium at Broadford - lots of snakes and reptiles!
Boat trip from Elgol to Loch Coruisk if its a nice day.
Walk to the coral beach at Dunvegan (with lunch in the three chimneys if you're loaded and have v well behaved dc!)

You can get a boat from Elgol and go seal spotting. I think they go out twice a day.

Otherwise there are great beaches all over the place. One of the best for kids is the coral beach at Claigan. It's a short walk to get there but easily managable with little ones. If you can climb the tiny hill behind for great views.

The Quirang is also amazing.

Just realised none of the places I've mentioned are near to each other - three different corners of the island!

we (me, partner and our twins - 7yo) just got back from a jaunt around the highlands and Skye. The weather was typical and very 'touch and go' but we had a few good days. Some of the hotels we stayed were a bit hard going for the kids when it wasn't dry outside. We did spend a good couple of days at This Place (it's just off Skye really) which was great for mine as they did some kayaking whilerelaxed indoors at the fire. Very child friendly and we had a good family room which wasn't that expensive compared to some of the normal 'hotels' we were at over the week. The place looks brand new on the inside byt is quite a dramatic looking place from the outside. If yours are about the same age as my kids I think they'd have loads to amuse them.

I think a week is fine. The Fairy Glen near Uig is very pretty; Neist Point is a nice walk to tire out the kids; An Nethalt has great views of the ocean. Food wise, try the chocolate at Jann's Cakes in Dunvegan and eat at Cafe Arriba in Portree.

Trotternish penisula is lovely, you can walk at the Quaring , Duntulmn castle is lovely, we got married at Kilmuir church and had our reception at Flodigarry country house. ( 13 years ago!)

MrsRandom78 Would we get away with taking a reasonably well-behaved 10mo to The Three Chimneys?

Also, when you walked to the Coral Beach were there many cows about? I know it sounds like a stupid question but I read on the VisitScotland website that you have to walk passed cows and I hate them!

yy to The three Chimneys. I think they would be more than welcoming of children at lunchtime but get a taxi cos the wine is good.

Loads of walks, beaches etc to keep the children occupied.

I don't remember many cows at coral beach, but it was February!!

We go to Exhibition cottage, sound of sleat - amazing private feeling beach, and great for some of the excursions above, the Clan Donald Centre (and woods there) and also great walks across to the beach where the boat comes in at armadale pier through the herb gardens. Can't recommend Skye enough

For a more relaxed but fab meal out the Loch Bay seafood restaurant was brilliant when we went a few years ago. Three Chimneys was lush but v posh

We've gone a few times to Sligachan or Carbost for the glamaig hill race - a spectacle in itself, but may be too early for you if you're on English holidays. No advice re 'nice' accommodation as we've always been in a bunkhouse with the running club.

Look out for the scarecrow parade in July. On the way to Glen brittle/Carbost I think.

Very pleasant flattish walks towards the Cuillin from Sligachan.

If your DCs are able the Trotternish ridge above the Old Man is amazing.

If you're sailors then I can recommend Isle of Skye Yachts, by Armadale. Used them twice. Sound of Sleat is beautiful for sailing.
