West Coast of Scotland in August..accomodation?

Had thoughts of doing a wee road trip with ds in August. The spur if the moment part of me would love to to just drive and stop wherever we like but I would hate to have no where to stay.

So I started looking at wee chalets and b&b s and everywhere seems to be either ££££ (fecking travel lodge is £80 a night) or full.

Am I being unrealistic? Can anyone recommend anywhere? Ideally Fort William/Augustus kinda area but am really flexible. We just want to chill and play on the beach and mooch about really?

Go in the second half of Aug, Scottish schools go back then and everywhere is much quieter.

Sorry! I live in the south of England and it's surprising how few people know about the difference in term dates. We visit in the second half of Aug every year but stay wirh family so haven't got any suggestions I'm afraid.

We're just back from a longish Easter
Break in Maybole in Ayrshire; loads to do and see, we are NTS members so lots of free entry to Culzean Castle, Robert Burns places etc. We haven't been to that area of Scotland much and were pleasantly surprised!

Theres lots of BnBs, static caravans, and pod camps in that area (although we are hardened touring caravanners).

Great rail links to Glasgow for some time at museum of transport.

Lots of accessible beaches, we just looked at them as it was freezing!

I'm a Central-belt Scot ;).

Have a look at the road to the isles website, lots of accommodation ideas here and the area is truly beautiful with some stunning beaches and quite a lot to do.

Why don't you just hire a camper van? Then you can stay wherever you like.

Would love to hire a van but I am a bit of a wimp... The 2 things that put me off are secuirty/safety ith i just being ds and i and breaking down. Plus they are blardy expensive!!

Am just watching with intent to steal ypur ideas! We looked on the NTS site and almost died at the rental prices for the properties (lovely as most of them are).

We stay at Port Ban in kilberry, mull of Kintyre - they have caravans, playpark and sandy beaches it is lovely, wild remote. You can get boat over to Colonsay and, I think, Jura.

Also we stated at Camusdarach campsite - again lovely sandy beaches, wild and you can go on to Mallaig and get a boat to Eigg.

Meant to add - Camusdarach has rooms to rent but you could (gulp) camp.

Caolasnacon is a fabulously peaceful caravan and camping site in Kinlochleven, near Glencoe. About 12 miles south of Fort William.

You really should come further north to Gairloch, it's absolutely beautiful.

Have a look on Google street map and you';; see what I mean. If you would camp, try Big Sand Camp and Caravan Site, just north of Gairloch, it's great.
