Edinburgh -nice hotel for dh and me for my 40th

I will be 40 at end of March,my dh said he would treat me to a few nights away.We have decided on Edinburgh as not far away to get back for kids etc.I was looking at Tigerlily hotel anyone been,or could recommend any others and also things to do.and nice restaraunts.Thanks in advance

I can highly recommend 21212 gorgeous food and a fantastic room with mega comfy bed and one of those mad egg shaped baths. It's a short walk from Princes/George St, and just round the corner from Valvona and Crolla.

We were tempted by Tigerlily too, but read too many reviews mentioning noise at night, which I'd have hated.

21212 is great too. Really amazing food.

Have a look at the Bonham, or Channings, or Hotel du Vin, or the Scotsman or the Waldorf Astoria Caledonian, or a bit further out Prestonfield House.
For special restaurants- we have a choice of Michelin star places (Kitchin, Castle Terrace, Martin Wishart, Plumed Horse), but also good mid range such as Wedgewood, the Witchery. Brasserie Galvin @ Caledonian.
Your biggest problem is the choice!

Thanks everyone some really nice places you have all mentioned,they all look lovely can't decide. Away to take a closer look at them. Not sure if anyone has been on any of the ghost tours, or anything else that would be of interest to do through the day/evening, any time we have been there in the past it is child related things we tend to do. Any ideas would be great thanks again

I stayed in the Holyrood Hotel with work. It was really lovely and quite central.

Botanic gardens
Dean gallery
Portrait gallery (haven't been since refurb, but have heard nice things)
Walk along water of leith
Go see a film at the filmhouse or cameo or dominion. Nice change of pace from multiplexes.
The zoo is good. See the pandas.
Walk up Arthurs seat.
Bus to Portobello. Walk along the beach with an ice cream.
It's a lovely city to just wander in. I miss it since we moved out to have the kids.

Have had a look at the Holyrood Hotel looks nice and central like you say thanks ChristmasJubilee will keep it in mind just trying to work out what dates we could go.Anarchicbadger that is a great list of ideas of things to do away to check them out thanks again everyone for all the suggestons.

I've been on both the Ghost Tour and also Mary King Close - both were works night outs, would say Mary King Close was the better one, intersting from a history perspective and pleasantly "spooky". The Ghost Tour was just a bit silly, really - am not sure if it'd've been that much fun if you went as a couple rather than in a group of friends / with older children.
Wandering around Grassmarket area, trip to Castle, Holyrood are all pretty mainstream/obvious places to see, but well worth while. Agree with all anarchicbadgers' suggestions, too!
I like the Bonham hotel, is slightly "Edinburgh" rather than "could be anywhere"; i think Channings is pretty similar.

My two favourite hotels in Edinburgh are Chester residence in the Westend and Hotel Missoni on the Mound
