Where to stay on Scilly Isles

Hello, we are hoping to have a holiday in the Scilly Isles next year and I'm just wondering if anyone has any advice on the best places to stay. I've never been before and at the moment I'm thinking probably not St Mary's as we want to be off the beaten track. We are looking for self catering accommodation for four of us. Any advice about which islands/areas/cottages people recommend would be welcome!

are you taking kids and if so how old. the scillies are great if you want to do lots of outdoor walking, sailing etc but if the weather is poor then it doesnt have as much to do as main land cornwall. This is why lots of people have a couple of days there but not a full fortnight. also be aware that the helicopter no longer goes there, you will have to get the ferry.

I agree with mummymeister, having been a couple of times to the Scillies - it's much easier to go to Cornwall. Just to add to the points already mentioned, the ferry is long with children, you can only take with you what you can carry in your suitcases (and if you have small children you may want to take lots of things.) Depending on which island you go to you can't always buy everything (food etc) that you / DC's might want/ need as most things are imported and may only arrive on one particular day of the week. In my opinion it's quite an expensive holiday for what you get.

Hi Francis - if i am being honest i dont think the scillies will be ideal for them at that age. if the weather is fab you can be outside walking/cycling but not if it isnt really as Mrs v says above there are other issues too. we usually stay in se cornwall near Looe at wringworthy holiday cottages and explore out from there. a couple of times we have done a day trip to the scillies which was just about enough for our 3. check out some of the cornwall type questions to find other places to stay as there is loads for small kids in cornwall a lot of which isnt dependent on the undependable weather.

St Marys is great for children of all ages. We go every year and stay on St Mary's which will be remote enough. If you want very remote then go for St Agnes camping. We took our 6 year old and 1 year old last summer and oldest said it was the best holiday ever. She loves walking, cycling and rock pooling , so ideal for her and you really do get a beach to yourself :)
