Tell me nice things about Thorpeness!

Just booked 3 nights s/c there, the house is big, rambling and looks lovely. Googled and it really looks interesting, good pub too! Looking to keep my 14 yr old trio happy there, they are "at that age" !! Any good recommendations for a nice lunch without breaking the bank? We are going in Oct half term. Thanks.

Thorpeness is lovely! We live a few miles away and we often go there for walks along the beach. The boating lake is nice. It's very pretty and rustic and a real getaway place.

Slightly further afield you've got Snape with its Maltings which is basically a music venue with shops and cafe and is utterly gorgeous. Aldeburgh and Southwold are just down the coast and are lovely old-fashioned seaside towns. There's Minsmere bird reserve, the lost city of Dunwich as well as Dunwich woods and Rendlesham woods which are protected woodlands and lovely for walking the dogs.

We once had super fish and chips from Aldeburgh and ate them by the harbour looking out to sea. We like Thorpeness but haven't been since dd was 5 days overdue- she is now 11. Have a lovely time.

Oh and practically anywhere round there for a nice lunch. Think the pub is called the Dolphin? The pier at Southwold is nice to eat at, amongst other things. Snape's cafe at the Maltings is nice, the Bell at Walberswick, and the fish & chips at Aldeburgh are legendary. Seriously.

i live 1 mile away! Went to Thorpeness today it was lovely & sunny & very busy.

We also live a short drive from Thorpeness and my 14 and 15 year old love canoeing or rowing on the boating lake and kite flying on the beach. Easy walk into Aldeburgh - lots of shops/cafes/delis/galleries, good ice cream shop, fresh fish sold from shacks on the beach, a cinema, good book shop, excellent fish and chips (but be prepared to queue) etc. Longer walk in the opposite direction up the coast past Sizewell Power Station to Dunwich (good pub, The Eels Foot if you cut inland half way between Sizewell and Dunwich). Further down the coast is Orford Castle which is well worth a visit and The Crown & Castle (owned by Ruth Watson) does good food (not cheap though). Also from Orford you can get a boat across to National Trust owned Orford Ness with weird pagoda structures (used for nuclear tests or something).

Go down to Aldeburgh, the White Lion Hotel does lovely food, as does the Regatta & Lighthouse Restaurant (I prefer the Regatta) if you want somthing a bit cheaper there is a Prezzo, go online for your vouchers.
If its warm enough in October you send the kids out in Canoes for an Hour or so on the Mere.
You can also hire bikes at the golf club
The Parrott & Punchbowl in Aldringham does nice pub food & is a friendly local.
WHat sort of thing do your 14 yr olds like? Boys or girls?

dottygamekeeper, the queue at Aldeburgh chip shop is Massive, out the shop & down the road, can take 40 mins to ge to the front.
Get the kids to stand in the queue while you nip next door to the White Hart & have a drink.
Also if it is still open (not sure if it was just for the summer) the Pizza'a made & served in the White Hart beer garden are Lovely, all fresh produce..mmmmm!

Gosh thank you! The house is quite large by the look of it, its green , called BRAMBLETYE and its next to a large red brick sort of building opposite a green?

Definitely fish and chips in Aldeburgh, have them on the beach , best fish and chips in the world

The Dolphin in Thorpeness is good for pub lunch , or try one of the Snape pubs .The cinema in Aldeburgh is also very quaint.Lots of great walks around there and take a boat out on the mere .

Take your tennis stuff, the sanctuary is next to the country club & tennis courts.

ah now the owner said she used to be able to watch her children playing tennis, she lives in a green painted house!

Off to Thorpeness on Thurs for three nights, very much looking forward to it, although I hear the weather forecast is dire! Never mind, thank you all for your very good info, will report back!
