Holiday in Shetland Islands with 2 toddlers

Anyone have any tips for this? Think we want a self-catered place, but ideally one that is toddler friendly (1 cot would be ideal).

Take warm clothes....
The inter-island ferries are amazingly cheap.
Fab coastline.
Lerwick has a nice leisure centre.
Sorry, that's no help with accommodation.

Thanks wrathomum - that's a good start!!! (I'm a northerner, and all our holidays are uk, so the wardrobe thing isn't a problem Grin)

Tourist centre is usually pretty helpful. Are you taking / hiring a car? If so there are some beautiful peaceful places to stay outside Lerwick. Avoid the big hotels.

Shetland museum has lots of toddler friendly things to do and Clickimin leisure centre has toddler pool, flumes, outside pool, very small soft play area, cafe. Lots of playparks in Lerwick and every small village has one. Havly and Isleburgh cafes have kids play corners.

St Ninians beach is a must see but there are loads of other beaches you will probably have to yourself. Great for bird and whale watching, searching for crabs, fish, interesting shells.

Go to a Sunday Tea and if you are lucky they will be locals playing music - Vidlin ususally a good bet. Check here for whats going on locally.

This site has an accomodation bit which has the odd holiday let place.

Windproof clothes yes. Bring both warm and sun hats for the children as you never know what the weather will be like.

Go to one of the fish shops - don't buy the stuff they have on show, ask if they have x and they will probably get something super fresh out of the back for you.

Also the (pet) fish shop in Lerwick is a big hit with toddlers.

OR go to Orkney instead :o

Sorry. Naughty.

Thanks Velvet. Superhelpful.

Yes to a hire car. Not sure yet about accomm but thinking self-catering given 2 young DCs. Wondering if there's much available that is child friendly, e.g. cots etc. Even a box of toys... Elder DC massively massively into wildlife so we're up for beaches, long walks and that stuff. Museum looks good. Desperate to see live music!! thanks.

wrathomum - thanks. Not this year - maybe next Grin

Yeah don't know of specifics but you will get places that can provide cots and toys, plenty of families come to visit so just ask. If not let them run riot in Harry's toy department!

Grrrrr wrathomum Wink. Actually if you get the boat its lovely to combine the two. Always a gamble with how smooth it will be even in the summer though.

Nice piece about travel to the Shetlands in today's Telegraph.
