Yorkshire - short breaks for group of friends with children

Me, DH, DD(4) and 8 friends are keen to go away for a short self catering break in Sept/Oct this year... There will also be 2 younger children, aged 12m and 5m. Yorkshire seems like the most central point for everyone-but where? We're after a cosy cottage feel but with things nearby suitable for our group.... Maybe a beach, too? Would like to be fairly rural but with a pretty town nearby for wandering and lunch. Can it be done? Hoping lovely MNetters have some suggestions....

have a look at groupaccomodation.com and bigholidayhouse.com both websites specialise in large house or groups of cottages to sleep a number of you. I think this would be a good place to start ie find the accomodation first then worry about the place. if you do it the other way round you will be spending your time chasing accomodation that is big enough. also try the tourist boards website they are always really good.

I think somewhere in or around Whitby would suit you (but avoid Staithes with babies- it is v pretty but beach water quality is awful, it is cobbled and v steep, lots of steps and parking has to be booked privately at the top of the village).

Scarborough, or somewhere near - loads of stuff to do from donkey ride on the beach, steam train to Pickering and with a car a day trip to Whitby to buy jet.

Also the best fish and chips in the world.

Thornton-le-Dale. On the doorstep of the Dalby Forest, and an easy drive from Scarborough/Whitby. Close to Pickering for the steam train We've had several fab holidays there. We recently stayed in a cottage that was one of two or three around a courtyard which would be fab for a group to block-book. If you're interested, PM me and I will send you the details.
