1 night away from London without DS, Margate? Whitstable? Recommendations?

My parents have very generously given me and DH £200 to spend on a Saturday night away next month while they look after our DS. We are in SW London so want somewhere that is not too far away (def don't want to stay in London), does anyone have any recommendations? The money is to cover B&B/hotel and meals and hopefully something towards petrol so we're not looking for a pricey hotel.

I fancy a weekend wandering around little art galleries and nice shops with a nice dinner and somewhere boutiquey to stay - we love the seaside so I was thinking of Margate but there are very mixed reviews of the place and it sounds like it might not be quite as up and coming as I'd hoped. Maybe Whitstable but I can't find anywhere to stay there with availability. We've been to Brighton recently and although we love it would like a change from there. It could be anywhere really as long as it's not too far - does anyone have any recommendations? Thank you!!!

Not by the sea I'm afraid but ticks all your other boxes....dh and I went to Oxford and stayed in The Old Bank. A blissful 36 hours....[wistful emoticon]Grin Think I need to sweet talk the parents again Wink
Have a lovely time

Spend the day in Margate, wandering around the shops and visiting the Turner (the current Turner exhibition is only on until May and it's wonderful) and then stay at Belvidere Place in the centre of Broadstairs about 3 miles up the road. Right by the lovely beach and lots of lovely restaurants :)

Great tips thank you! Posey, I don't think I've ever been to Oxford so will try that if my parents are ever foolish enough to do this again! PattiMayor, just looked at the pictures of Belvidere Place - it is gorgeous!!! What a great find! Thank you, will definitely visit Margate for the shops and the Turner but won't stay there, Broadstairs looks lovely, I'm wondering how much we can pack into two days!!! Thanks both!
