Well it's not a hotel but a B and B, however the most amazing breakfasts here: www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g186319-d584063-Reviews-Ambleside_American_style_Compston_House_B_B-Ambleside_Lake_District_Cumbria_England.html and they don't allow children. There is a restaurant nearby that does amazing steaks/chops etc.

The Samling. Lovely small hotel with views over Windermere - and amazing food, so no need to go out!

Here, total bliss. Spa and pool as well, gorgeous rooms and 5 min walk into York centre.

Fisharefriendsnotfood · 21/02/2012 14:02

I've never been to York, what's it like? I just found out am expecting dc3 so this could be the last break for a while!

York is gorgeous. I used to live there (actually, I want to move back but DH isn't keen). Not sure about the city centre and 5* options but slightly out of town Middlethorpe Hall is lovely. Stay in the main house. It's a hike or short taxi into Centre of Yorkbut the villages of Bishopsthorpe and the Bishops Palace are close.

Avoid York on race days, unless that's your thing of course. Super busy and no hotels. There are usually big meets through April and May

VivaLeBeaver · 21/02/2012 14:49

York's lovely, you can have a bit of a walk on the ancient walls, visit the Minster. Lots of little independent shops and touristy type shops to look round. Nice places to eat, go for a ghost walk one evening.

Fisharefriendsnotfood · 21/02/2012 15:32

York sounds like a plan then Smile

Small guest houses/ hotels make me uncomfortable for some reason. I find it easier to relax when one of many
