Cottage recommendations near river and mountains

Anyone got any UK cottage recommendations for the summer holidays? DH wants to do some gentle family kayaking and I'd like to do some family hillwalking. Also needs to be dog friendly!

Do you want cheap and basic, or luxey and lovely?

Look around Hay on Wye, you have the River Wye for kayaking, and the Black Mountains and the Brecon Beacons nearby.

Luxury and lovely really but not too many ££! Thought about Wye area already. Just wanted recommendations really if anyone had stayed anywhere special. Thanks RoughShooting.
