Subject title is basically it but a bit of background info that might help Smile

Dh has been (and continues to be) very ill and we are currently awaiting some make or break test results Sad. He really wants us to go away for a few days to relax and get our heads round things but we've been advised by medics that it would be unwise to leave the UK right now. In view of the fact that we never get time without the children (other than when we're at work) a very generous friend has offered to have our children and so we will be driving from the south coast to Newcastle to drop them off.

We think continuing to Edinburgh sounds like a good idea so are looking for a hotel with a pool and possibly a spa in the area. We don't want to be in the city centre as we really just want to do very little except walk, talk, breathe and relax lol although would possibly like to go to the cinema to see war horse whilst we don't have the children in tow. Good food, good service and good views also on the wish list Grin.

Oh and checking in on a Monday for 4 nights.

Would be really grateful for some recommendations.

Meant to say - good luck with your DH's results. Fingers crossed for you.

Stobo Castle and Norton House are both nice. Or what about Prestonfield House, in Edinburgh but surrounded by countryside as sits within the Queens Park. Good luck with DH's results.

You don't want to be in the city centre, but I take it you want to be able to drive/travel into the city centre to see some of the sights?

Suggestions:

Fife
Balbirnie House (45 min drive) (in fact, not sure if their spa is built yet)
Rufflets (1 hour + drive) (ditto re spa)
St Andrews Bay or Old Course (1 hour + drive)

The beauty being you could explore St Andrews and the East Neuk of Fife which is beautiful and peaceful. And not too far from Edinburgh. You can get the train from Fife to Edinburgh over the rail bridge, it's a nice journey along the coast.

Edinburgh outskirts
Norton House Hotel
Prestonfield House
Dalhousie Castle

I know you don't want to stay in the centre, but the Sheraton has a fab spa (rooftop jacuzzi!)

In terms of cinemas

There is a teeny tiny one in St Andrews (where I once saw Prince William!)
One in Dundee and one in Dunfermline, if you were staying in Fife

In Edinburgh there is a Vue at Ocean Terminal (Leith, where the Britannia Ship is, and near some great bars and restaurants) and one at the Omni Centre in the city centre. There is an Odeon on Lothian Road (near the Sheraton) and one at Wester Hailes (not a holiday destination) and a Cineworld at Fountainbridge (near-ish the centre)

I hope you have a lovely time!
