Swish hotel in Norfolk/Suffolk

Looking for a nice hotel for a dirty weekend away with DH - Norfolk or Suffolk. Needs to be nice and plush, pretty grounds, good bar and restaurant, and spa/pool would be a bonus. Any recommendations?

Apparently nice. And rumour has it that a v deluded glamorous MNer lives nearby. Grin

But if you want a bloody lovely village, spa and bar, go here.

MegBusset · 03/01/2012 23:20

I looked at the Hoste but it's a minimum two-night stay at weekends and we can only get away for one night :( Same for the White Horse in Brancaster Staithe which looks gorgeous.

Strattons website suggests they may do one-night bookings but only if it falls between two existing midweek bookings.

I'll put you up on our z bed if you like. Will chuck in a couple of sausages for breakfast too if you ask nicely. I'll have to ask you to keep the wild sex to a low growl though as you might wake the baby.

Grin

Titchwell Manor?

Congham Hall?

ShowOfHands · 03/01/2012 23:35

Oh there's Felbrigg Lodge too which has a swimming pool iirc.

MegBusset · 04/01/2012 13:38

It's very kind of you to offer a bed, but the presence of a squishy baby to cuddle may mean DH gets a little less attention than he would like.

I'll have a look at those others, ta :)

having stayed several times at Strattons and the Hoste, I'd go for Strattons and I'm pretty sure that they do 1 nights at the weekend in the winter months

IndieSkies · 10/01/2012 14:25

Where are you driving from?

Hassled · 10/01/2012 14:27

The Swan at Lavenham? Looks lovely.

MegBusset · 10/01/2012 14:28

We're in Norwich and can go up to an hour away really.

I know it's not v exciting, but if it's the hotel facilites you mainly want (ie grounds/pool/spa/plush bar/dinner) why not Barnham Broom or Dunston Hall or Sprowston Manor?

Or if you were feeling really flush and wanted scenery, the Blakeney Hotel has a pool also.

IndieSkies · 10/01/2012 14:35

Blakeney hotel Some rooms a bit old fashioned, some more contemporary, but it has the best views and great facilities, pool, spa etc. Eat right next door in the White Horse rather than the hotel restaurant.

Avoid the Victoria in Holkham.

Strattons is great, but Swaffham is not as romantic or scenic or linked to nice things to do as the coast.

IndieSkies · 10/01/2012 14:36

Ha! x-posted with Merrylegs Smile

Merrylegs · 10/01/2012 14:38

(But agree with Indie - The White Horse at Blakeney is fab for food - actually, think you can stay there too).

IndieSkies · 10/01/2012 14:42

You can! (stay there) Very nice!

lucysmum · 10/01/2012 14:51

swan at southwold ? no grounds, but great beach ! Great beer and food, nice shops.

Ickworth lovely but maybe too kiddy friendly.

MegBusset · 10/01/2012 16:13

Gah, again with the two-night minimum stay at weekends for both those in Blakeney :(

By the sea would be ideal but as long as the view's nice I'm not really fussed. Main thing is big bed, fluffy towels, fab food, a cosy bar for the evening and preferably not a child in sight Grin

The Angel hotel in Bury St Edmunds is lovely. It is right in the middle of BSE with the Abbey Gardens across the road, a day spa around the corner and there is also a theatre in the town.

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 10/01/2012 16:27

Tuddenham Mill on the Suffolk/Cambs border? I don't think it has a spa though.

MegBusset · 10/01/2012 18:28

Oh the Swan at Southwold looks fab! That's definitely the front runner. Thanks!

The Swan is fabulous.
Look at The Crown in Southwold, too.

Also look at seafront hotels in Aldeburgh?

DilysPrice · 10/01/2012 19:48

The Crown and Castle in Orford makes its living from dirty weekends and has some good special deals on at this time of year, well worth a look.

Merrylegs · 10/01/2012 22:15

Or actually the Dolphin in Thorpeness is fab for food and has a lovely bar - plus you get the kitsch madness with lovely beach that is Thorpeness. here
