DH and I have a rare weekend off next weekend, and thought about going to York. Its a lovely city, close enough to us to not spend lots of time travelling and lots t see and do. So where to stay?
Must
-be walking distance to the centre

  • not too expensive (max £100 per night)
  • lovely!

We stayed at the Guy Fawkes hotel right opposite the abbey. Fairly sure it was under £100 and it was kind of unique. shabby chic maybe? mediaeval house, wonky steps and walls etc but we thought it was lovely. Bar downstairs serves great ale.

oh shame. They do have a sister pub somewhere in York, but don't know it at all.

I always stay at the Royal York (right by the station), very nice and quite spectacular inside - the food is also very good. However it can be a bit noisy sometimes. Really lovely walk into town and along the wall.

My preferred hotel in York is the Novotel on Fishergate (no character or quirks) but good standard, decent food and lovely friendly staff

Have stayed in Royal York too. Could have held football match in room it was so big. Very, very nice.

Flubba guy Fawkes, lamb and lion and marmadukes are evidently all linked. And no availability at all!

We stay at the Monkbar Hotel. It has a car park (unusual for York) is very close to city centre. If you ring on the day they usually discount the room. Each time we go we get a different style of room, it's expanded into different buildings over the years. The breakfast is a bit standard, but all the rooms we've had have been lovely and staff are friendly.
