City Break by Train with 5 & 2 Year Old?

We're looking to go mid August with flexible dates travelling from London. We were originally thinking of York as I know the city well but the train fares are ridiculously expensive. I think the maximum time we'd be able to travel would be 2 - 3 hours. Any ideas?

Do you have a family railcard? £26 and you will save more than that in one journey. Have to travel outside peak times but you can buy the railcard on line. Bristol? Cambridge? Another vote for Bath.

canterbury? will be cheaper than bath! cathedrals,castles, beaches and animal parks all in easy reach via public transport , ?
