We just can't find anywhere reasonable or decent! Our budget is max 1K. We live in London so not more than about 4 hrs away. We are 2 adults and 1 DD (3) and we would like self catering. Does anyone have any ideas please.

I'd recommend the isle of wight, although you have to factor in the ferry crossing.

pudding25 · 15/05/2011 22:30

Thanks. I am looking there-do you have any suggestions of places to stay there?

We stayed at Redway Manor near Merston, but try Island Cottage Holidays as they have loads of lovely looking places.

We always rent a cottage and have used English Country Cottages several times. I have just booked a holiday in Tenby for half term week using this company. They have lots of offers on for half term at the moment.

Last August we had a fabulous week staying in Much Wenlock, Shropshire. The cottage we stayed had 3 bedrooms and accommodated 4 people. It cost well under £1000.

Thanks everyone, will have a look later.

Hi, we always stay at Wringworthy holiday cottages just outside Looe. Its about 4 or 5 hours drive from St Albans and half an hour from Plymouth so it isnt the bit of Cornwall right down the bottom. our kids loved it when they were young because they have animals - chickens donkeys ducks that sort of thing. Now they are older they prefer the swimming pool and Games room. Just had a look at their website and they have a one bedroom cottage for 3 @ £600 in August. Worth giving them a try. if not we have used awaywiththekids website. Also the tourist board websites are good place to start. There's definately nice places out there for under £1000 for your family so good luck!

Pembrokeshire in South Wales is cheaper than Devon/Cornwall for holiday accommodation, doesn't get as crowded, and has some fabulous beaches.

We got an inexpensive holiday apartment from these people a few years ago.

It might take a bit more than 4 hours to get there though.

pudding25 · 16/05/2011 22:24

Thanks, we have been to Pembrokeshire for the past 2 years so want somewhere different and Wringworthy is fully booked for Aug!

www.coombemill.com is a holiday site with farm animals, tractor rides, lots of space etc. We were there in february and think our cottage was about half your budget, and we felt like we really got more than our moneys worth. It's in North Cornwall, we were driving from Southampton, but the journey was pretty quick. My girls were eighteen months at the time, but there were children of all ages there from babies up to early teenagers - I reckon 3 would be the perfect age. Have a look, see what you think!

pudding25 · 17/05/2011 08:21

It looks lovely but fully booked!!!

How about The Goodwood Hotel in Sussex beautiful near the sea great food and swimming pool

SherlockHolmes · 21/05/2011 20:52

If I didn't live in Norfolk already I'd try this place. Looks like direct access to the beach and is quite a good spot for visiting the Broads, Norwich, North Norfolk coast, Great Yarmouth (if you like touristy stuff) plus Bewilderwood etc.

Hi there,
If this place in Bacton isn't free, my parents have two holiday cottages in Norfolk (www.northfarm.info), which they recently converted from an old cart shed. They are £600 for a week in the Summer holidays and as they live on a farm, it is a lovely place for kids. They are rated 4* and have had good reviews.
