We went through the adnams letting agency which i think is now called Durrants. we always found the cottages to be Ok. Not sure what you think of as very expensive so not sure if these would be Ok with you. We always book somewhere that has a star rating because then you know it has been inspected and it will at least be clean. Some of the more modern houses are a bit cheaper than the old picturesque ones on the front or near the lighthouse. if you only want is as a base then as long as you are 5/10 mins walk from the beach that should be OK. we did always find parking a problem so worth asking about this.

try places in reydon - withing walking distance of southwold but much cheaper! we booked with Acanthus but summer hols popular - to book the smaller cheaper properties in southwold/within walking distance you need to reserve the year before we've found!

Southwold itself of course is expensive for a holiday cottage. However we have a cottage 5 miles away with 4 acres of woodland which children love so you can enjoy the country and the sea. We don't make big profits but let it so we can retain the old unique family home; it is quiet so may not be for you...have a look at www.suffolkholidaycottage.co.uk
