Anyone been to Auchencairn in Dunfrieshire?

I'm looking for somewhere to stay for a few days over half term. I fancy Scotland, but don't want to travel too far (we're in Preston). I've found a nice cottage in Auchencairn, but can't find any reviews about it or the area.
I want someone close to the coast, where we can go walking and where there might be some castles/old buildings for DH to look around. I'd prefer somewhere quiet, but with a supermarket within a 10 minute drive.
Can anyone let me know their thoughts on this area?

Haven't been there but we always go to the Moffat area, which is lovely. Not too long a drive to Culzean Castle (amazing) or Drumlanrig Castle (loads to do).

Auchencairn is certainly more rural but if you want to be near the sea, then I guess it could be good.

Lol, was about to recommend that area but didn't realise that's where auchencairn is. My parents have a caravan the other side of Kirkcudbright, area is lovely. Castle Douglas is nice, lots of wee shops and cafes. Kirkcudbright itself is nice too but not as much as CD. There's a big Tesco on the outskirts of CD, plus a wee Co-op and a Tesco express in Kirkcudbright.

If you bike, worth a drive to here, do bike hire too plus good playground, don't bother going into Newton Stewart!:

My mum and dad say Threave Gardens (NTS place in CD) are lovely too but never been myself.

Would agree that Cream O'Galloway and Kirroughtree are great places for kids and adults. If you want historical buildings, Caerlaverock Castle (South of Dumfries) is excellent.
We usually stay near Wigtown (South of Newton Stewart), which has lots of book shops and a couple of nice cafes. It's a bit further West than Auchancairn, depends if you want to combine a drive around the Machars with a trip to Kirroughtree.

Wow, great, thanks for the extra info. We have 2 DDs 4 and 7, so will definately look up those recommendations too!

While your there take the kids to here it's a fabtastic place. kids get to make chocolate things and they get to take it all home and only costs about £10 per child
