North Yorkshire - Dales or Moors ?

We fancy a week in this area in May- have never been but there looks like there's lots to see. Which is best Moors or Dales? We'll be self catering so has anyone any idea where would be the best area to stay that's central for coast and inland. Also - ideas for places to visit as we will have to fill the days with things to do with boisterous ds (2.8). Thanks.

The Dales are a long way from the coast - either the east coast or west coast. North Yorkshire Moors are closer, but the distances are still significant.
If you want to be halfway between the dales and coast and be close to the North Yorkshire Moors, Helmsley would be a good base.

Thanks. I really have no ideas of distances so that is good to know. I'll have a look on the map for Helmsley.
