Is it do-able on public transport?
I now the train links are OK,
but what about when you get there - would it be better to hire a car?
Thanks

Train via Portsmouth and ferry to Ryde connects with the Island Line down to Sandown and Ventnor. And the buses are good. links here

Thanks a lot.

Any ideas whether this is a good holiday for a 6 and 11 yr old? On not much money?!

the iow bus service is not very good and quite expensive. I did this last year and on the occassions I used the bus I was waiting over an hour for busses that did not turn up. The taxi service is good for late evening transport of shorter distances.

when you take into consideration how much 2 or 1 adult and 2 children cost on the bus to use a taxi would not be to much more.

However saying that we did have a fantastic holiday on the island and did not use busses daily any way, just once to the super market and twice to get further a field around the island.

I've been from London to IOW by public transport. Trains good and no walking inbtween and on the IOW we got on an old tube train to get straight to Ventnor.

I see what you mean now! We didn't travel around the area.

still worth doing, though, it did not affect the holiday, I will probably do it again this year. But is a bit inconvenient at times.

ChippyMinton · 20/02/2011 17:42

Where are you staying?

The IOW is a great place to holiday with kids, there's lots to do and the buses are pretty good.
