Driving from SE England to NE Scotland with 2 under 5

Are we mad?

dh really wants to drive up to Scotland for Christmas as it would be considerably cheaper than flying. But...

ds2 will be 5 months, is ebf (ds1 will be 4) and I'm the only driver.

we'd stay overnight somewhere to break the journey up but I actually think it's a crazy idea!

Anyone else done it with 2 kids?

Several overnight stays to break the journey, I hope. We've done SE England to NE England (north of Newcastle) and that takes 1.5 days realistically. There is a lot of England before you even get into Scotland. Train? At least you're not stuck driving all the time (but prob no cheaper than flying). If you add in 2 overnight stays (each way) en route, is flying really more expensive than driving?

i agree that once you've paid to stay somewhere overnight, plus hideous amounts of petrol, plus all the food then you may as well just fly or take the train

you can do overnight train, but that is quite expensive.

What about the sleeper to Aberdeen. Kids would probably sleep and baby could sleep in buggy? I did Glasgow to Aldeburgh with a 10week and 2.5 year old and it was okay. Did 5 - 6 hours one day stopped overnight and then the rest the day before.

Personally I would fly.

Or you could drive overnight - baby would be fine - 4 year might be a bit uncomfortable in car seat.

Have you checked out the flights - I just did and to go Luton - Aberdeen Out 23rd Dec back 30th Dec is £244 for all of you.

Petrol £160 (4 * £40 fills)
Hotel (travelodge )£100 (2*50 stays)
Total £260.

Checked sleeper it is £400+

You won't have a car when up there and you will have to get to Luton but it might be preferable as there isn't much in it moneywise
