Can anyone who knows the Fife (St Andrew's) area help me plan this journey please?

I have tried googling, looking up bus time tables, but I am just not getting very far!

My friends are staying in a caravan park near St Andrews next week, it is in Elie, Leven. I am going to go up for a few days and visit. I'll be coming from Glasgow.

Now it would seem that my nearest train station is Leuchars. The caravan place is about 20 miles from there. I have debated getting a taxi, but think it will be a bit much, so was wondering if there was a bus I could get?

Friend could pick me up, but I would rather save her the hassle if possible. Thank you!!

From leuchars, you'd have to get a bus into st Andrews, then another one down to elie. Leuchars to.st a takes about 10 min, and the buses run every 10-15 min. Not sure about buses to elie, but the timetables used to be on-line. Stagecoach I think. Will try to.find a link.

here you go. Bus timetable from St Andrews to Elie!

FromGirders · 06/08/2010 21:27

Sorry, can't do a link on my phone, but it seems to be the stagecoach 95 service, which I think is just hourly. I'm inclined to think that if your friend would pick you up, you should let her!

Very late cross post there! If you're coming from Glasgow though, you either need to change at dundee or Edinburgh. Don't some of the Edinburgh trains stop at leven on the way up? Think you could prob get closer than leuchars?

weegiemum · 06/08/2010 21:34

Would be easier to go to Markinch - that was certainly the closest train station when I worked in ANstruther! You would need to change in Edinburgh though

Ah fantastic I knew there would be people more knowledgeable than me Grin

My plan was to get the train Glasgow to Edinburgh then Edinburgh to Leuchars.

Were exactly is Markinch? I'll google! Would that get me nearer than Leuchars?

It's looking like it will take maybe an hour and 20 mins to get from Leuchars to Elie. I am starting to think it might be best for someone to collect me at St Andrews but I know it will be a hassle, despite my friend assuring me it wont Grin

Train to Edinburgh Waverly, then Stagecoach X60 to Elie. Would take a while, though, acc to Traveline Scotland. Isn't it likely your friends will be visiting St A anyway at some point? No hassle to pick you up if they'll be there anyway. We'd pick friends up - rather do that than have them do complicated journey.

Habbibu · 06/08/2010 22:01

Or see if friend might even pick up from Leuchars - from Elie you can go cross-country via Strathkinness to Leuchars, bypassing St A traffic. Given that you're staying a few days, accept the lift graciously, and spend what you would have on buses etc on a bottle of wine/box of chocolates for them.

ElizabethWakefield · 06/08/2010 22:05

Having now googled, it would seem that Markinch is roughly the same distance from Elie as Leuchars, just in opposite directions.

Am going to look into getting from Markinch to Elie now.

After all this, it better stop raining!! Grin

Sorry, cross post with you there Habbibu. I think it actually might be less hassle to just accept the lift and buy wine/ice creams for the kids.

I am going to end up traveling for ages when I could just get a quickish lift!

Thanks all for the advice and making me see sense Grin

Have fun. Elie is fab - hope you get good weather, and fish and chips at The Ship!
