Looking for somewhere in Exmoor National Park to break our journey?

Can anyone suggest anywhere? We'll be travelling from Bristol to Instow, Devon and want somewhere to stop en route for the dc (8,4 and 2) to have a break. Just for a couple of hours, so inexpensive if possible, but with somewhere to grab some lunch. Any ideas?

Don't know which route you're taking but if you are going anywhere near Dulverton that's a nice spot to stop. Woods bar very good, we have taken our kids. River and small interesting shops. Driving through the Exe valley very picturesque.

Thanks , Dulverton looks doable. We've no particular route in mind - have got all day as we can't get into our holiday cottage until 4pm so we'll just amble along.

We need somewhere near there to stay one night, again to break our journey and meet up with family. Does anyone know of anywhere family friendly?

Thanks!!

Exford is a really pretty little village. You could have a pub lunch and a run around on the green?

a lot of our holiday guests rave about Exmoor Zoo, which is near Bratton Fleming (not too far from Barnstaple)

bamboo · 28/07/2010 20:48

Thanks all . Exford does look lovely but I'm wondering if the pubs are a bit posh for my rabble!

And the kids would love Exmoor Zoo - might look to do a daytrip there.

Christ no! Wouldn't have thought. Unless of course you are verrrrry common. Tee hee. The ones we went into were just nice friendly country pubs. The sort that stock Scampi Fries. Yum.

bamboo · 28/07/2010 22:18

Thanks peachsmuggler - the pubs on here looked a bit gourmet but sounds like we'll find something to suit - the dc are house-trained!

Ha ha! There's one down by the river which has picnic benches outside, can't remember the name. Have fun!

Exmoor Zoo is brilliant.

The Fisherman's Cot is brilliant, at Bickleigh (Exmoor's centre) just off the M5 at Junction 27.

You then go up the North Devon link road, an easy drive (about an hour?) to Instow from there.

It'sa lovelt place.

fishermans cot

Drayford · 29/07/2010 23:56

& if you go the the Fisherman's Cot, then you can go here to shop for twee things and and here for the DC to look at the trains and here to lose everybody in the maze!

Exmoor Zoo accept the clubcard vouchers from Tesco, as long as you've converted the vouchers to the actual Days Out vouchers.
