Manchester Hotels - Can anyone recommend one? Thinking of the Thistle?

Hoping someone might be able to recommend a decent hotel to stay in. DP are having a few days away in Manchester next week, while DD is also away for a few days, so it's quite last minute.

Ideally we would like something central, nice, breakfast, and a pool would be a bonus. So far have come up with the Thistle, but some of the reviews aren't really the best, so rather than look through loads more hotels, thought i would turn to MN for some recommendations!

Probably around £200 for the 2 nights at the most.

The Thistle is £96.60 for the 2 nights which is less than I thought it would be.

Thanks

The Midland have rooms from £75 per night for next week (weekdays, not sure about weekend)

Iklboo · 20/07/2010 12:49

Or look here for some ideas

Dont whatever you do book into the Brittania, I once booked a client in there but never again. She said it was like being in a red light district !!

cheltenhamgal · 20/07/2010 12:51

The Novotel on Dickinson street is good, I have stayed there previously.

Thanks everyone, will have a look at those mentioned.

I like the look of The Midland, so far, so will have a look at the others now. Thanks

Malmaison

Thistle is dodge-ville

Also opposite the Malmaison is the Michael Caines' hotel which I can't remember the name of - google it - that's supposed to be reasonable

Also the Hilton - very tall building - quite swish !

LadyBlaBlah · 20/07/2010 18:47

Abode is the Michael Caines one

abode is nice - have only eaten there myself but PILS have stayed a few times.

Another decent one is the Lowry hotel but slightly further out

The Didsbury House and Eleven Didsbury Park are lovely.
Me and dh have stayed in both for romantic nights away.
The breakfasts are to die for.
Didbury is lovely, lots of nice little pubs and restaurants, we only ventured into Manchester once as we didnt need to go too far.
Manchester city centre is a short bus ride from end of road or 10 minute drive in.

Im staying there again in October with my mum

IPredictADiet · 20/07/2010 19:04

I do love Didsbury House/EDP (agree about the full irish breakfast ), but they are quite a bit more than a 10minute drive into town at most times of the day, and parking in Manchester is awkward and expensive. If you will be in town a lot, then I'd stay more centrally.

malmaison is nice

city inn is good (opposite malmaison so you can always go there for dinner!)

ElizabethWakefield · 20/07/2010 20:55

Thanks everyone, just been having a look through the links.

Although Didsbury house looks lovely, I have made the mistake in the past of booking a nice hotel a bit outside the city and then spending a fortune on taxis

I am back to being all confused again, everywhere looks nice! DP doesn't think we will use a pool, and he might be right, but i like having the option! Going to go back through everything that has been suggested! Going on Sunday, so really need to make our minds up!

I have also looked at Jurys and The Ramada, so any opinions on these would be good too (basically working my way through lastminute.com)

No idea if it's too pricey, but the Lowry is lovely and only about £1.50 in a cab from Deansgate!

I've eaten in Malmaison and Lowry - both good.

lowry spa is fab too

The Lowry is veh classy dahling and malmaison is more edgey glamourous IYSWIM?

ElizabethWakefield · 20/07/2010 21:14

I thought the same about Jurys and The Ramada, but DP is saying I am spending money just for the sake of it when there are other hotels that look "fine". He just doesn't get it
