durbsmominUK · 28/12/2023 18:03

My DS in currently in Y5 and we will be applying for two private schools for Y7. We would like to get a tutor to help with the entrance exam prep. Can anyone recommend a good place to start looking for tutor, there are so many websites I'm not too sure where to start!
Thank you

Your best bet is to ask for personal recommendations from other parents.

I'm a private tutor, entrance exams, but based in the South East. 95% of my students come from word of mouth.

If you want to use a listing site, First Tutors is a good one. They take references and check DBS and qualifications. It's the only site I'll use as they don't charge an ongoing fee to either tutors or parents. They do charge a small finders fee to the parents to release the tutors details but that's it.

Teachers to your home is a reputable agency also, but the best tutors tend to work independently.

My recommendation is to check that any tutor or agency is a member of a profession organisation such as the tutors association https://thetutorsassociation.org.uk/find-a-tutor/ or qualified tutor https://www.qualifiedtutor.directory/ they have tutor directories with suitable tutors.

One agency I would recommend that is very good at getting students through entrance exams is this one <a class="break-all" href="https://topschoolanduni.com/topschoolanduni.com" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">https://topschoolanduni.com/topschoolanduni.com

Hi@durbsmominUK , I used to teach at St Faith’s in Cambridge and now specialise in tutoring children for entrance assessments to independent schools, both online and in-person. I’m fully booked for 1:1 tuition at the moment but am just about to start a small, in-person group specifically for Year 5 pupils who are preparing for entrance assessments to Cambridge and Ely independent schools.

I’ve been teaching for over 30 years, have a master’s degree from Cambridge University and an enhanced DBS. I’m not sure if I’m allowed to post a link to my website here but you are very welcome to message me.

Most of my students come via word of mouth or are siblings of previous students.
Now I no longer teach in a school it's a bit harder so I sometimes put something on social media.

Hi, happy to help… I know how stressful 11+ can be! We’ve been using a 1-to-1 online tutoring site: youth-in-action.com . It’s run by some lovely secondary school students who do it all for free and my DD has been finding it really useful so far!
