Improving English writing for A level student not doing essay-based subjects

Just wondering if anyone has ever tutored or had tutoring for this? I'd like someone/ideas to bring English up to uni spec over the years when A levels are being taken as none of the A level choices are essay-based, but potential degree will involve critical writing.

Writing an argument based on a controversial topic is great for this. E.g. "Online gaming increases violence. Agree or disagree?" "Zoos are cruel. Agree or disagree?"

There are tutors out there for this sort of thing and books on critical essay writing if the student is self-motivated.
