oops sorry auto correct on phone Catfish

I just cannot get my head around the absolute nonchalance of the mum. She acts like sending her 14 year old daughter and boyfriend sexually explicit and vile messages to kill themselves was somehow comparable to someone who maybe drunk drove once. Same time she was financially abusing the father and totally lying about everything that led to his financial ruin, not to mention the fact he was left to pick up the pieces with the daughter.
Anyone else think she seems like a complete psychopath? And also that her being a mom got her off lightly. I feel like if it had been the dad doing this they’d have thrown the book at him. One of those children could have easily killed themselves, or the child that was constantly accused of being the catfish.
The daughter is so sad at the end. Wanting the mum she thought her mum was but it’s quite clear watching it that this is a deeply manipulative, dangerous woman

I was so shocked when it revealed who the IP address belonged to. Still can't get my head around why she would do it! Or the reaction (or lack of) from the daughter when they told her it was her mum. Absolute nut job!

Thingyfanding · 30/08/2025 12:58

She’s definitely a psychopath. Her poor child.

Piffle11 · 30/08/2025 13:01

What got me is the mum saying something like, we’ve all done wrong things in our lives … As though encouraging your daughter to kill herself is simply a ‘wrong thing’.

and yes, I agree that I think she got off very lightly indeed. If I was that boy‘s mother … Well, I wouldn’t be happy.

I haven’t watched it but I read an article about it and how the daughter still wants a relationship with her mother

FrogFalacy · 30/08/2025 13:21

Must be so hard for the daughter not to want a relationship with mother. The mother in person to her seemed loving and her biggest supporter. From prison she basically love bombed her.
Yet for 2 years the same woman clearly had a sexual interest in her daughter’s young teenage boyfriend, a jealous sexual hatred of her own teenage daughter and some sort of pathological need for attention. They mention munchausen in the show but to me the mother has a clear sexual deviancy too. And the level of deflection, lies and manipulation are so scary. If I was that father I’d never want her near my daughter or any grandchildren ever again. I don’t see how that woman would ever be capable of a normal mother daughter relationship or any relationship

I was so shocked - she was a coach at their school! Her daughter's final piece to camera hints at her knowing her relationship with her mum wasn’t fine before and can’t go back to that way. The mum is still delusional and downplaying what she did - telling your daughter to go kill your self and telling her how ugly she is repeatedly is unforgivable- and all the my previous trauma and anorexia just made it worse and not more understandable 😡 they didn’t really get further into the horrendous jealousy (although was a bit about how it may have been mum fancied the boyfriend ) of mum for daughter that must be at root of this.

I don't understand why it wasn't treated as a case of child abuse. Why didn't the police take social services with them when they went to the house?

Completely agree. It’s as though she was jealous of her own daughter and wanted her ‘out of the way’.

His parents must be absolutely devastated thinking about how they were friends with this woman, and what she has put their son, their family, and her own daughter through.

I,ve just watched this and find it so hard to understand, her poor daughter and boyfriend and her husband. The mum only seems to see it from her point of view and is downplaying it, I feel so sorry for them. But disliked the mum, how could you do that

kc431 · 31/08/2025 12:12

This is absolutely nuts, the mum clearly has some sort of psychopathy. At the end, she was crying and basically made it all about herself, poor me, this is why I did it, etc….not once did she apologise or express any guilt for her daughter and what she put her through! It’s very clear the daughter is totally under her spell, and possibly even knew - I can’t believe she wasn’t remotely shocked when the FBI told her who it was. Awful all round really.

Lex345 · 03/09/2025 07:16

I watched this last night and was completely shocked at how this was prosecuted/handled when it was discovered, how her minor daughter was told and the fact the mother has been allowed to continue contact with the daughter from prison.

I really, really hope that the daughter is being given access to quality therapy to unpick what is one of the most unhealthy mother/daughter dynamics there could be.

I can't help thinking if a man had been the perpetrator, a lot more lean would have been placed on the sexual element of those messages in prosecution/sentencing/protection of victim.
