Any recommendations for a good toy for in the car?

DS is 11mo and seems to get really bored in the car. I'll give him a toy to hold but after about 10mins, he'll throw it on the floor and not want it back. Any tips for a good toy to keep him occupied? Especially as we're going on a 4hr car journey next month!

DD always loved those small, portable 'magna-doodle' tablets - the ones that come with a little stylus attached and are erasable. Otherwise, we'd bring some plastic animals, a few books, and some of her music for the car cd player.

We borrowed this from a friend once. Ended up keeping it for months because he loved it so much! Luckily friend didn't mind.

we used to use those straps to attach toys to the car seat, thus negating floor flinging opportunities

The 'Buggy Buddies' books that have the strap thingumy attached. You know the ones I mean?
That way it stays connected to the car seat instead of your DS chucking it on the floor!

I'd say 10mins is good going for an 11mth old .

We just did 8 hrs with my 20mth old - and we got through with
-lots of snacks
-lots of little toys doled out one by one(then thrown on floor after 4 10 mins)
-timing it well for sleep!!
-songs and rhymes. Dh doesn't like rhyme CDs but you could try? Thankfully dd often entertains him too.

I sit in the back too if it's a long journey, as it calms him and is easier for my nerves (can't do crying/moaning at all)

Good luck

Thank you for all your replies.

Our 4hr journey will be in the evening so hopefully DS will sleep most of the way. We do have a 20-30min drive to and fro nursery each day. CD of nursery rhymes normally helps but I had seen the activity toy that you linked to GoldenSnitch and wondered if it was any good. I may now get that as part of DS's first birthday present in a few weeks time!

One warning about that toy...It has 1 song, which gets played over and over and over. There are some animal noises too but DS liked the song. And there's no volume control. There is thankfully, an off switch though

You may want to bring it out once you've done the first half of the journey to save you from going mad. After that, it's not so bad for quick trips around town.
