You can buy knock-off Lego in Poundland for much cheaper, and it’s compatible with the branded stuff. You can also buy big boxes of secondhand Lego on eBay.

My Lego-loving boy likes Knex too. I don’t know if it’s expensive new because there always seems to be loads in charity shops!

There's plenty of compatible brands that are much cheaper. The sets sold in B+M are good.

Here is an example of the ones sold in B+M (that one is £12.99 or 2 for £20).
Other retailers like The Works sell the same make sometimes but under the name of Bloc Tech.

K'nex is quite expensive too, iirc, but imo it's great if kids are into building structures and 'machines', DD had lots of it.

I used to buy DD almost all her Lego secondhand on eBay or in charity shops for a fraction of the new price

I would look for second hand on Facebook marketplace, eBay, Vinted etc.
Lego instructions are much clearer to understand than the copies.

You can get secondhand Lego quite cheaply compared to full price.

I was going to say though, my son loves Plus-Plus which is a similar building idea but very tiny pieces.
