Recommend me a holiday game please!

Due to go on holiday soon for a few weeks. I'd like to take a new game in case of rain/general boredom. We are travelling by car so space not a huge issue. Me, DH, and kids are 9 and 12 and enjoy a challenge. We've got value out of Quirkle, Pictionary, Cluedo, and family Trivial Pursuit, for example. Might be nice to have a smallish game suitable for taking to a pub but also interested in board games. 2019 is the summer of.....?

How about Yahtzee! If you like card games, cribbage is a good one. We also like to do jigsaw puzzles, everyone can help with those

For taking to the pub - Love Letter. Small and quick.

Boggle Slam
5 second rule
Ok Play (on Amazon, like flat Connect 4 with more players and surprisingly competitive and fun)

Catan

PandaG · 17/07/2019 23:31

Love letter is good and small, we like Exploding Kittens and Sushi Go. Coup is good too - pack of cards game. All above suitable for in a pub waiting for food etc.

Settlers of Catan, Ticket to Ride, both entry level strategy games - we love both of these. Need a bigger table to play.
Ingenious is a placement game, next step up from Qwirkle perhaps. Azul is tile placement, everyone we have taught it to has enjoyed it, from 7 yo nephew to my 75 yo Dad, and lots of friends.

The Mind is a good one. Very simple to play but you become obsessed with getting better at it.

Pass the pigs is good for a round or two.

Tiny Epic Defenders is a cooperative game where you work together to defend the land against monsters.

Patchwork doodle is like Tetris but you draw the patchwork pieces and the first to get them all to fit wins.

Heratnumber7 · 17/07/2019 23:35

A pack of cards will give you opportunities for lots of different games, and fits in your pocket.

Amazing - thank you for all the replies. Going to have to spend a bit of time looking at these and sorts out a few gift ideas too! I'd completely forgotten about yahtzee which I was obsessed about as a kid (thought I was so grown up haha).

Also interested to see a positive review for an escape room game - considered one of those for over Christmas but didn't in the end. Maybe this year.

We have enjoyed a couple of escape games. Not as good as an escape room obviously, but fun nonetheless.

averythinline · 18/07/2019 13:11

Our current favourites
ticket to ride new york (although does have pieces but is great!)
Gubz

averythinline · 18/07/2019 13:13

How could i forget love letters - brilliant and fits in the tin with gubz so we often take both....

averythinline · 18/07/2019 13:15

Port Royal - bit longer but good fun
Coup
Skulls also enjoyed
will stop now to go and look up epic as DH loves a co-op and we dont have a small one!

Thanks again for all the suggestions. I've bought the Monopoly card game and patchwork doodle as it sounded interesting. I have a whole load of the other games saved in a list for next time.

@Adesignforstrife 'Sussed'. A talking, card game asking all sorts of questions you answer for yourself. But before you say which you've chosen and why, others have to guess what you've gone for. Then it's next person's turn. Scored accordingly. It's so interesting and at times surprising hearing people's choices and what they have thought you would pick. Smile

Eg What do I wish I owned?
a) A remote control to stop people talking
b) A machine to cheer me up
c) A jet propelled pack to take me around.

We have Travel Catan! Works well but is fiddly.

Love Letter to the Princess is our recommendation.
