Lego Mindstorm too advanced for an 8yr old?

My DS is lego mad - for his 8th birthday he wants the latest lego Mindstorm robotics set (would be his first).

He currently spends lots of time doing the advanced Lego Technics sets which he does on his own with no help. He also makes his own creations.

I think the next step up would be Mindstorm but from reading the reviews looks like its mainly teenagers that can do it. DS is also computer mad but has not yet got into programming (You can program Mindstorm from computer apparently).

Anyone in similar position or recently bought it for a DS of a similar age? Do you think it would be too advanced?
