How to buy a Wii - pretend I'm your granny

I'm considering buying a Wii, mainly because we need a DVD player, and I'd also like to be able to watch iPlayer on the telly. I've been told that a Wii would enable me to do this.

I've seen this one on Amazon.

What other bits and bobs would we need / want to go with it? We don't play any computer games, but I think some of the "moving about" Wii stuff sounds fun. I would need a Wii fit for that though, right?

Thats what we've got, same games same console. The kids plugged it in and started using it straight away so no complicated set up. HAvnet watched DVD's in it yet...didnt know you could!

cyb · 05/11/2010 16:33

Wii sports is very moving about, you dont nee d Wii fit for that

SpawnChorus · 05/11/2010 17:01

Thanks cyb.

What's the difference between Wii Sport and Wii Fit?

OK, my understanding is that Sport = playing tennis, golf, boxing etc with a remote control, and Wii fit = aerobics and yoga etc on a board.

HOw about dancing? I don't need a Wii fit for that do I?

Argh...wtf is a nunchuck controller???

Do I need to get a second Wiimote if two DCs are to play at the same time?? That's another £38! Hmm I'm confused.

Yes, you need one remote per person playing. A nunchuck plugs into the remote for additional gamplay, essential to some games. it has a joystick controller on it and is also used for things where you use both hands, eg boxing.

LyraSilvertongue · 05/11/2010 17:42

So, you need a Wii, two remotes, two nunchuks, Wii Fit board if you want to do yoga etc, plus any other games you fancy. Some games (like Wii Sports Resort) need a Wii Motion Plus attachment. That's also an extra cost. You should be able to find bundles that include more remotes etc.

SpawnChorus · 05/11/2010 20:04

No...I did consider it, but it was £10 more and I'm a cheapskate thrifty...

DooinMeCleanin · 06/11/2010 16:27

You can't watch DVDs on mine or my Dads either. The PS3 has an intergrated blu-ray player.

LyraSilvertongue · 07/11/2010 22:22

There is software out there that will allow you to watch DVDs on the wii. Google it.

SpawnChorus · 07/11/2010 22:30

We now have a Wii AND a DVD player Hmm Grin

Lyra - I did look into that, but I was just a bit too chicken to start fannying around with the inner workings of the wii.

Feel like I've had a complete electrical goods overload this weekend.
