Lego City Fire Station/Police Station

DS1(8) and DS2(6) have mentioned that they would quite like these sets for Christmas.

They both have lots of Lego, but mainly small sets and boxes of assorted blocks. I am a bit worried that if I do buy them they will end up in pieces in the big box of Lego, and so it would be a complete waste of money.

If you have either or both sets how have you found them? Is a base plate big enough to keep it all on set up (and so less likely to be taken apart once they've built it?) Or would the answer be to keep all of the bits in a seperate plastic box (although this wouldn't guarantee that they wouldn't wander, especially with their 4yr old sister around!).

Any thoughts gratefully received!

Got both over the years for my DS (7). He is Lego mad and despite my best efforts - yes - they have both ended up in the big Lego box BUT he does rebuild as he loves to follow instructions.

Alas, both remained as a solid construction for no longer than 2 weeks - the temptation to rebuild was overwhelming!

It would be a good idea to try and encourage them to keep the bits separate but didn't work in my house!

Would thoroughly recommend them despite the expense if your DS's are as Lego mad as mine.

Thanks.

They are both Lego mad, so it sounds like he will really enjoy it.

See, in an ideal world where I have six bedrooms and a playroom it would be no problem at all as they could all be artfully arranged!

Anyone else have them and have any thoughts?

I have six bedrooms and a playroom and they still end up as rubble!!! DS has the police station and it is actually the most intact item he still has. He really loves it although has moved on to Star Wars Lego recently.
