Lego Experts, pls tell me about the trains ...

DS will be 11 on the 1st Sept, and we don't really know what to get him.

He is very VERY keen on Lego, has loads of it.

Doesn't have a train set, has just fried the electric transformer bit of his old scalextric.

Sooooo (can you see where I'm going here?), I wondered if the lego train sets would be up to the mark.
I've had a quick look on the website, and the passenger train looks a bit pathetic tho'. It also says not compatible with the 9v trains. But gives no indication what the 9v trains are.

My questions are :
Do you get to build the train from lego? does the train go well? the trains are battery driven, do they eat batteries at the speed of light?
Can you tell me anything else useful?

Thanks in anticipation.

This is an ancient thread but was googling and these are pretty much all my questions. Anyone out there able to answer the above?
