We both heard a voice

Ok, so I've had a few 'spooky' experiences in my life before, but this is the first time it's happened with someone else with me witnessing the same thing at the same time.
My DS and I were about to play a board game, and I said something to him like "Shall we start then?". Then we both heard a voice across the room say "Uh-huh".
It clearly came from across the room, but we both heard it so clearly that I thought maybe it had to have been him, and he thought maybe it was me (eg somehow 'throwing' our voices)... but we both agreed it had come from the middle of the room, near his gaming chair, and both confirmed that it wasn't either of us.
I quickly got up and looked at the chair - my phone was on there, but the screen wasn't lit up like it would be if it was in use or had a new message. His gaming device was completely shut down too. No other devices were in the room.
We got on with the game and nothing else happened. I concealed how freaked out I was, as I didn't want him to be too freaked. He agreed that it was really odd, but said he wasn't scared and he said "oh I sometimes hear weird noises in here".
So I'm glad he's not scared, but still I'm not going to bring it up with him again for long time just in case it causes him to feel spooked, as personally I grew up in a house that felt haunted and I didn't like that!

I feel a bit gutted that it happened, as our home is new-build and I've never felt any spookiness here before, so I had thought it would be ghost-free!
Despite me believing in the paranormal (as my previous spooky experiences have felt so real), I do try to keep an open mind as to how there might be a rational explanation for things, or even just someone's own brain causing a hallucination - but how could that explain 2 people both hearing the same unexplained voice? If anyone has any thought, do let me know please.

You believe in the paranormal? You’ve had a few spooky experiences? That’s a surprise!

Dinkiedoo · 20/02/2026 13:47

When I was little I was going to put my hand in the fire and I heard a male voice shout "no". There was only me and my mother in the house.

Roundaboot · 20/02/2026 13:47

but how could that explain 2 people both hearing the same unexplained voice?

You both heard something but it wasn't a voice. It could have been the house creaking, or pipes, or a car radio outside, noise from the neighbours etc etc. Your brains have interpreted it as a voice and then you've built a spooky story round it.

I am really open to (and hoping to find!) a rational explanation like this, honestly! We were sitting next to the window and both heard the voice coming from the other side of us, in the middle of the room, so not from outside. & it's not a room which borders on to a neighbour's wall. & it definitely sounded like a voice, not a house creak/pipe.

Well you’re obviously not going to find one
Just forget about it, what else is there to do

Nicefortheday · 20/02/2026 13:59

And even if you did hear “uh huh”… what you going to do?

If I was a ghost, I’d hope I’d find something more inspiring to say than “uh huh” to a board game

Jaq27 · 20/02/2026 14:14

That is weird and unsettling OP!

Two similar things I'd like to share...

A few weeks back, late at night in bed I clearly heard a woman's voice cry/sigh/moan. It was coming from the dressing table area. DH was away so I lay frozen in bed for a while, listening. Eventually I must've drifted back to sleep.
Then one night recently I heard the crying/weeping voice again. This time DH was home. I called him into the bedroom and then we both heard the voice.
On closer inspection we discovered it was the wind whistling through the failing double-glazing in an extremely creepy way.

Now here's a weird unexplained one ... my MIL had been gravely ill for weeks and was on End of Life Care. DH and me were on the sofa watching telly when a male voice quite clearly said '10:24'.
It seemed to come from the air - the space in front of DH.
DH had his phone with him and he checked it, but it wasn't that, and there was no timer set. The time was about 9:15pm when we heard the voice, so an alarm makes no sense as it was not 10:24.
The show we were watching had no dialogue that could've been misheard (we even re-wound it to check it wasn't from the TV) and our Alexa has a female voice and is at the other end of the room.
'10:24' made no sense to us at all.
DH expected his mum to pass at 10:24 that night, or at 10:24 in the morning ... but she lived for a few days more and died in the afternoon. We still don't know why or how a voice told us '10:24'.

It'll be some sort of notification on your phone

Oh really! That is a very rational explanation, thank you 😚I feel better now!

Sidebeforeself · 20/02/2026 14:19

“Uh -huh” isn’t really saying anything though is it? It’s just a noise. If the voice had said ‘Yes I’m ready ,please go ahead” then thats something to worry about!

Jackiebrambles · 20/02/2026 14:22

Yeah my Siri often speaks when I haven’t asked her too! I bet it’s that.

Or it’s a little ghost child who wants to join in the game, quite sweet really.

mochimoons · 20/02/2026 14:25

This happens with siri for me all the time so if you have an iphone it was probably that.

I've just tested it out by saying "Hey Siri" and sure enough my phone replies "uhuh" from across the room! Thank you so much @onyourway and others- honestly I would have been freaked for life about this, so I'm so glad you worked it out for me!! 😄
Obviously, I didn't say 'Hey Siri' last night, but when I said 'Shall we...?' it must have triggered it.

Just shows how sometimes there can be a rational explanation! I feel silly now. Thank you though to those who offered sympathetic responses!

I won't post on here about my other weird experiences, as I don't think they can be explained, much as I would genuinely like them to be rationalised!

Ah! If you have iPhones, then I bet it was Siri!

My radio used to pick up conversations between local taxi drivers and their control office.

Agree! It was Siri!

My phone is forever saying “uh-huh?” to me when it thinks I said “Siri”
If I don’t look at my phone immediately then the screen goes black so it not lighting up doesn’t mean it wasn’t Siri (unless of course you don’t have an iPhone)

EDIT to say should have read whole thread! Cross posted.

Bukrahfilmishmish · 20/02/2026 14:48

Although you already have an explanation, I thought I would post anyway as it’s interesting IMO 😂

Our brains are wired to find patterns, both visually and aurally. Sometimes we see or hear patterns that aren’t there.

There is an interesting old radio documentary with Giles Brandreth about a device that was supposed to be able to record “ghost voices”. I was at a Halloween event where it was played. Everybody just heard white noise when we first listened to the sample. Giles Brandreth then says that he distinctly heard Winston Churchill speak on the recording. On the second playing of the sample (when we knew what words to listen for) there it was, clear as day. We could all hear it.

TeenyWeenyPolkaDotPeeny · 20/02/2026 14:49

if it’s not paranormal, it’s probably Siri if your phone was on the chair. My Siri for some reason get randomly set off, and it’s often when a question is being asked and Siri does a quick “uh-huh” 🤣

You're forgetting how unambitious ghosts appear to be. They seem to confine themselves to moving small objects, causing draughts and rapping, occasionally diversifying into footsteps. Clearly only the remarkably unimaginative haunt domestic spaces. The drama llama dead who groan and carry their decapitated heads or rush screaming down corridors pleading for their lives must only get NT and historic palaces gigs.

Yep! Siri often says uh uh to me, not necessarily when I’m addressing him either. I always say he’s doing his Elvis impression!

I meant rapping on walls, not rapping as in performing rap music.

Actually, that would be a genuinely horrifying form of the supernatural, Tupac endlessly droning Me Against the World in your ear from beyond the grave.

Like the bit in Ghost where Patrick Swayze essentially tortures Whoopi Goldberg into cooperating by following her around 24/7 singing 'I'm Henry the Eighth I am, Henry the Eighth I am, I am' over and over in some bad approximation of a Cockney accent.
