Have you actually ever seen anyone possessed in real life? Also what do you believe in ? Jinns or ghosts or something else?

I think I tend to believe in mental health conditions and social contagion. Not saying genuine possession doesn't exist, but its not the first thing I would consider. And Jins and Demons, if they exist, are probably the same thing.

I think 98 percent is mental health and 2 percent is actually posession

I actually think they are two frameworks to describe the same phenomena: one is a "pre-modern" framework, the other is a "modern" (post enlightenment) one.

ladyditaverner · 19/09/2024 18:48

0% is actual possession OP

Elphame · 20/09/2024 10:03

Voluntary possession is a fairly mainstream practice in some forms of occult craft.

I guess however you are talking about involuntary possession without the person’s consent? That I have not seen although I’ve seen some entities attempt it.

Yes, exactly. Like in Irish folk beliefs, the phenomenon of the changeling was a pre-scientific way of making sense of a baby born with a disability or chronic condition, or a woman with what we would now recognise as post-partum depression or psychosis. And sometimes a way of making infanticide (or, less often, murder, as with the killing of Bridget Cleary in 1895j ‘acceptable’.

It's fascinating, isn't it? I love all this 🙏
Edit: obviously what I love is knowing about it, not the terrible stories 😬

FloofPaws · 20/09/2024 12:27

I also think mental health, my DD has Tourette's and wears a badge saying I have Tourette's , I'm not possessed

Accbabymom1994 · 20/09/2024 12:41

I had postpartum psychosis which I thought I had a jinn with me and I nearly cut my arm off , so I know it's mental health

Hey this was a few years ago , I'm definitely a lot better, it was a mix of underlying issues due to childhood abuse, then postpartum psychosis and I had a baby with Agenisis of the corpus collosum I was in denial of the condition and sleep deprived so it took a massive toll on me. I watched a movie called Sijjin recently and it made me think about the whole Incident so wanted other people's input.

In my belief, God loves us and cares for us and formed us in His image, and it's really really hard for anything to 'possess' us. We can choose to be open to bad or good influences, though. I'd always want to check in with a medical doctor as well as a religious leader who respects modern medicine... Someone generally trying to live a good life and be prayerful and not think about bad spirits isn't at enormous risk (I believe) of succumbing to spiritual attack. In fact thinking about it too much is the danger!

Azureal · 29/10/2024 14:20

I believe it can happen but it is very, very rare and doesn't happen by accident. If someone fears they or someone else may be possessed or at risk of possession, it is much more likely to be a mental health issue than anything else.

My reason for believing it can happen is that I know a vicar who has been involved in exorcisms and they are absolutely not the kind of person to lie about it. There is a very involved and strict process they follow to rule out mental health or other reasoning before they consider that it may be 'real' possession.

I've never seen or experienced anything myself but I did have a phobia of possession when I was younger and so I researched it a lot.

To me, it's logical it would be very rare. What benefit is there to a demon or any kind of evil force in something as obvious as possession? Far better to cause havoc under the radar surely.

I agree why would they make it obvious

I believe there are demons who want to corrupt human beings.

I agree,

If people believe in God and Angels then they must also believe in demons and Satan.

If people don't believe in God then it doesn't matter to them !

Well, I suppose if you’re gullible enough for one, you’re gullible enough for all.

If you feel that way why be on a thread discussing "Possession"?

Why not just let us gullible Godbotherers.have a discussion in peace?

igotafeelingthat · 20/04/2025 20:36

It’s an old thread but my experience from a Hindu perspective-

I was about 9-10 years old when I was visiting a religious ceremony with over a 100 people with songs / music to the deities Gods , with my granny and saw a woman acting strange. She was looking wild and moving her head and limbs wildly up and down and around. I asked my gran what happened to her and why is she dancing / behaving that way - to which my gran said she is probably possessed in a way I would understand. I didn’t ask her to elaborate and neither did I research more. But I have thought about that woman on a few occasions whether she got better or worse.

ives ad similar but im Christian so I thought it was a demon

tiptoptoemaytoe · 30/01/2026 20:25

I’ve head of a meek aunt develop the strength of 10 men when an exorcism was performed on her using words of god and no touch. Apparently her feet turned outwards, her pupils dilated and her features changed. As a person of faith myself, I believe in djinn possession.
