Do you believe in spirits or being able to contact them.

Hi all! Sorry if this sounds insensitive. I'm a very curious yet skeptic person. Never really believed in the supernatural, but still get scared of the unexplained.

Up until last year I would totally laugh off a ghost story or anyone who talks about physics, clairvoyants, mediums that sort of thing. Complete skeptic.

I'm clueless so bear with me.

But since my beloved grandpa died I've been overly curious. I kinda like to believe that an afterlife exists but so spirits and ghosts etc? I'm not sure! Can mediums speak to the dead? Again, not sure. I've always thought they were big con artists to be honest.

Recently I've had a deep fascination with watching videos around contacting the dead and those who claim to contact them. I still don't really believe though. Nothing has made me think wow, I believe.

But what I want to know is do you believe? Experiences etc?

My family are generally non believers like me but they have mentioned going to a medium.

I feel like I don't want to go as I feel they are con artists who make money out of the vulnerable but at the same time curious to go.

do you believe?!

Nope.

TheVolturi · 24/06/2021 20:41

Errrm, I'm undecided really. I have not lost any family luckily but I lost my partner when I was a lot younger. Over the years, at random times, I have felt his presence, out of the blue and unprovoked by anything. It was almost like suddenly bumping into someone that you didn't expect to see.
But I don't think I would pay a medium. Too open to exploitation really.
Sorry for your loss op. Flowers

I believe my beloved grandparents and other family members are looking out for me.
I see it in small ways and often with hindsight as well as we are so busy in our lives we often only notice things when we look back.
I'd not visit a medium.

Lifeinabeautifullight · 03/07/2021 19:24

If you have a spiritualist church near you perhaps you could go to a service..they will have mediums there.

Mummyof2andapig · 03/07/2021 19:25

I absolutely believe

Ipreferwinter · 03/07/2021 19:28

No of course it is not real.

Just another way to make money from vulnerable people.

Maybe some of them have convinced themselves but it really is all smoke and mirrors.

If you want a bit of theatre, fair enough but that's all it is.

Roonerspismed · 03/07/2021 20:21

Yes I do

Livingintheclouds · 03/07/2021 20:21

SantaMonicaPier · 03/07/2021 20:22

I believe. I'm a member of a spiritualist church, non profit making so absolutely not for exploitation.

AbstractHeart · 03/07/2021 20:28

I believe in gin and vodka, but not whiskey! That's an evil spirit!

SpeedRunParent · 03/07/2021 20:39

Some people seem to be hardwired to believe this stuff. The rest of us recognise it as wishful thinking. Never the Twain shall meat, as they say.

user432543424532 · 03/07/2021 20:57

No.

When people are grieving and desperate, or frightened about their own mortality or that of their loved ones, the human brain takes on protective beliefs that are comforting and make us feel safer. It is a common human behaviour and seen in many other scenarios too.

We cannot survive if we are overwhelmed or incapacitated by grief or fear and the brain has many sophisticated ways to manage this to keep us alive.

When we are distressed or frightened, the ability to convince ourselves of things for which there is no evidence - simply because it is soothing or makes us feel safer - is powerful and well documented. It is necessary for survival.

It is also well documented that hallucinations (auditory and visual) can occur in various stressful situations and I think both of those situations are extremely stressful.

Those situations and emotions also make people more vulnerable to manipulation and exploitation.

Bouledeneige · 04/07/2021 09:41

No. Of course not. It's a con preying on desperate people.

Longestfewdaysupcoming · 04/07/2021 09:41

No

WeatherwaxOn · 04/07/2021 09:45

I'm open minded.
I've lost quite a lot of people close to me and there have been times when I have experienced things I can't provide a rational explanation for.
I wouldn't go to a psychic or medium though as they seem to be fraudulent and whilst for some people they may gain comfort by doing so, I just see it as making money from someone's grief.

Hirewiredays · 04/07/2021 09:56

I saw one when I was 15 with my mum. Everything that was said in the meeting has come true. So many personal details of my life came true. It's truly incredible.
