The unexplained

Male voice on baby monitor.......

QueenAnneBoleyn · 13/03/2019 19:53

So late last night I’m relaxing in bed (on Mumsnet) and suddenly heard a deep male voice groaning / mumbling on the baby monitor.
I shot straight out of bed to check on DD....... all seemed well.
We live in the middle of the countryside so there was no noise from outside and DH had nodded off downstairs. No one else in the house with us.
I’m not particularly woo but this really creeped me out. I can’t explain it. Never happened before. Definitely didn’t imagine it.
Anyone experienced this? Any explanation?

Is it one that works on radio waves? They can pick stuff up. Or was it the wind?

Our baby monitor when ds was little picked up the signal from someone else's, I could hear them reading their dc a bedtime story! They can pick up other devices on the same or close frequencies.

Definitely wasn’t the wind. We’ve had it for two and a half years and it’s never picked up anything else before yet I suppose (hope) that’s a possibility. Creepy as hell though.

How far away are you from other houses?

Is your house an old house?

Our monitors often pick up other babies and dogs. We live a long way from anyone with a baby so I’ve no idea how far the range is that it can travel.

Ours would sometimes get interference, maybe a taxi radio or similar?

I think it is not unusual for baby monitors to pick up radio waves from other things eg digital phone calls, passing taxis, radio stations.

According to DM my baby monitor used to pick up taxi radios when I was wee. She was similarly freaked out to hear a manly voice (and swearing) coming out of my monitor!

Not an old house - built late 70s.
A couple of older / elderly neighbours nearby.
Not sure about the taxi. In the past whenever we’ve tried to get one, none of the “local” firms travel out where we are as “it’s too far”.
I struggle to get a phone signal most days.

On a more sensible note, it's not hooked up to the web and therefore hackable is it, OP?

It’ll certainly be interesting to see if it happens again. If it had sounded like part of a conversation or radio transmission it wouldn’t have creeped me out so much.

Hi admin. No it’s not hooked up to the web.

I had this too.

Terrified me. The listening part was downstairs with me. Suddenly a male voice started speaking. I shot up the stairs. DH said oh it’s the radio waves, it’s picking up. The Male voice, then said, no it’s not. Agghhh.

I think it was picking up radio waves. We are rural and no children around to pick up their monitors.

Ours picked up a neighbours baby crying one afternoon. I went upstairs to dd's room only to remember she wasn't even at home that day Blush
Last night I got freaked out when in the middle of the night I got up to pee and my cat set of one of my ds's toy which creepily said "do you want to sing with me" I ran back to the bedroom before my rational mind worked out what it was.

Dobby and Ginny both of those would have me seriously spooked! I’m reassured that it possibly was radio waves from somewhere.

That would utterly freak me out too.

Apparently when I was little (enough to need baby monitors, so mid-80s) our baby monitor used to pick up conversations the chamber maids were having in a local hotel!

The monitor in my old house picked up some radio waves, I was very freaked out to hear quiet violin music and then German voices (no idea how it was German radio given we are in the NW of the UK!)

A few years ago our baby monitor in our new build house picked up our next door neighbour (and I recognised his voice) talking to his grandchild on (I presume) their monitor.

Many years ago our baby monitor used to pick up Vatican Radio; it gave us a proper laugh!

My baby monitor started playing the bagpipes in the middle of the night one, one of the spookiest experiences of my life.

I don't think it was anything supernatural, just very creepy.

Could one of the elderly neighbours have a camera fitted by family to watch carers? Or monitor them over night for falls?

My monitor screams occasionally, just a loud high pitched robotic noise..
