These are ace! I wish I had something to add...best I could do is swaying shampoo bottles in the bathroom (previous house to this one) when they were full & the door/window was shut.

Sarah, your night terrors story gave me the creeps before bed last night!

dustarr73 · 20/08/2014 13:35

Shia hat story really scared me the first time and it still has the same effect.Great story.

mellisawashday · 20/08/2014 14:10

Name changed as I've already posted and you're not going to believe anyone could have 2 stories but I do.

My uncle Billy RIP, had a house in the Oval, south London in the early 60's. My Grandmother was convinced the place was haunted and had several stories and eerie encounters. But the scariest was my other uncle Joe's. There was a bathroom at the bottom of the stairs and one morning uncle Joe was having a shave when something caught his eye in the corner of the mirror. He saw a hand, a disembodied hand holding on to the bannister as it ascended the stairs. He watched it for a good minute very slowly edge down the bannisters. He swung around and there was nothing there. He went to the stairs and on the floor he found a small gold ring, he put it on his little finger and was never able to get it off... It didn't belong to uncle Billy, or anyone else that had been in the house that they asked. It's hard to imagine how ow no one could have seen it there before..

I'm a bit of a sceptic but must admit I am loving these.

The strangest thing that happened to me which to this day, I still can't explain is that I was about 25 years old and was attending this computer college 4 days a week to get my ECDL.

Anyway, I was learning about powerpoint presentations and this particular module required me to put headphones on and listen to the lecture through the computer.

As I was listening the light over my head flicked on and off - didnt think anything of it.

Suddenly I started to hear music fading in over the speech of the lecturee. It was getting louder and louder. At one point I took the headphones off and could still hear the music as clear as day in my ears! There were no other computer windows open, and nothing can explain the fact I was hearing the music in my ear without headphones.

The music was The Entertainer by Scott Joplin - my late grandfathers favourite musician.

On another occasion I was working in a social club and would often stay at my grandma's as it was close to the club.

No matter how late I came home my gran would be sitting up in bed with her crossword, she coulsn't settle until she knew I was home safe.

One night I came home and went to see her, sat on the end of the bed for 5 minutes or so discussing bits and bobs. Said goodnight and walked out of her door and into my bedroom in the room nexto hers.

The following morning my gran told me that as I left the room a pink figure came over my head and settled at the bottom of her bed. It was her mother dressed head to toe in the clothes she remembers. My gran had shouted for me repeatedly before I had even closed the door behind me but I hadn't heard...

This is one from many years ago.

My dh then dp had family that lived on the Orkneys. I had family that lived near Naver forest and on Skye. We'd spent Christmas on the Orkneys and were travelling to Skye for the New Year.

The crossing was fine and we spent a night on the mainland before making the trek south. The weather deteriorated badly, snow, high winds it was becoming too hard to drive. The road was barely visible and we were worried we'd get stuck or go off the road. We decided we'd pull into the first house we passed and see if they'd put us up for the night.

Thankfully the farm we landed upon was a B and B although closed as they had family staying they did have camping pods, very new and very exciting and they had a brand new shower block built in a converted barn. The owners, I will never forget them Tristan and Molly kindly threw on the heating and got everything ready for our stay.

We bedded down that very night in lovely faux fur blankets, all cosy out of the wind and I slept very soundly until a blood curdling scream awoke me, startled looking for dp who wasn't there I threw on my clothes and boots and went out into the storm, drifting snow had me disorientated but I saw figures to my side and made my way as quickly as I could.

Tristan was holding my dp who looked awful I thought he'd been hurt, the wind was so loud I could barely hear him, another two members of their family came from the house and half carried, half dragged dp back to the farm. I was really concerned, the guys took dp upstairs and Molly started building the fire in the lounge.

When Tristan came downstairs he told me he thought dp was in shock and they'd got him in a hot shower as he was freezing cold, he wasn't sure how long dp had been outside. When dp emerged he was wearing someone's joggers and a t. Dp still looked dreadful, drinks were passed around and Molly tried to find out what had happened but dp would say nothing, he wouldn't go back to the pod either. So for the second time that night Molly found us a place to sleep, this time in a bedroom. Molly had moved her brother to the lounge.

Tristan took dp to one side at breakfast and returned looking white, I didn't find out what happened until nearly 4 years later when we were doing the same journey. Dp now dh said he wanted to stop in and thank Tristan and Molly for their kindness in person. We'd been in touch frequently but never back to the farm.

Tristan was the one who'd told me what had happened and he said it had happened since to others too, all were badly affected. This is what my dh recounted the following morning 4 years previously.

Dp awoke and needed a bathroom break, he'd gone to the shower block the snow was falling lightly as he'd approached the barn the wind picked up and he almost stumbled through the door. As he looked up he saw a bloke by the sinks, thinking it was someone from the farm he'd said hi and approached the cubicles which were next to where the man was standing. As he approached the man turned round, he looked as normal as any man but half is face was missing dp said it looked like it had been blown away by a shotgun. He'd turned screaming to run out of the barn and as he'd got outside he'd collapsed, when he came too the figure was standing over him, he screamed and as the man retreated he swears he saw his footprints. Moments later Tristan appears, followed shortly by his brothers.

Dh would never talk about what happened to me and he only told Tristan because he'd heard him weeping that morning and couldn't hold it in any longer. It always appears to men and only when the snow and the wind are high.

Tristan did some research and I received an email last year about the tragedies that have happened there and surprising coincidences. Next time we visit he said he would show us the documents, apparently it was too distressing to put in an e-mail. He wants to tell dh first but I get the heads up as it still affects dh to this day.

nicename · 20/08/2014 14:45

Ultra - we need to know! From my viewing of crims shows on telly, when someone says 'I'll have to tell you in person, not over the phone' it never ends well for them!

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 20/08/2014 14:45

Ultracrepidarian I've got goose bumps now Shock.

Your poor DH.

AlexVause82 · 20/08/2014 15:18

Ultra that is sooooo scary

VulvaVoom · 20/08/2014 15:28

When I was 15, I used to 'hang around' the village I grew up in but because everyone knew everyone, me and my friends would often go into the graveyard to have a sneaky fag (as of course, you don't get people in there at night)

Me and one of my friends went in there one summers eve at dusk and sat on the bench, smoking and chatting. I suddenly looked up and saw a man in a black suit stood at the end of a grave. He didn't speak and just stood there.

I've no idea how he got in as there was no noise of the big metal gates scraping opening (which would have alerted me and my friend to quickly put out our fags!)

I asked her if she could see the man, she said yes, we then just looked at each other wondering WTF? When we looked up again, he'd gone. We ran out of there faster than the wind!

And no, we hadn't been drinking/taking drugs! Still not sure if I believe though.......

MrsWinnibago · 20/08/2014 15:53

Melissa I used to live near the Oval and there were some very atmospheric houses there indeed!

EmpressOfBedlam · 20/08/2014 16:29

I went to stay in a barn conversion on a farm a couple of weeks ago with another couple and our 5 yr old dd.

It felt a bit eerie but I am paranoid about things like that so am constantly trying to tell myself it's nothing and I am being stupid etc.

I found it hard to sleep the first night and in the morning we were talking to the lady (of the couple we were staying with) and she said, 'what time did dd2 come in this morning?'
I said that I wasn't aware that she had, it would have been out of character for her to wander round an unfamiliar house and she definitely wouldn't have walked into someone else's bedroom without us. Also she was still in bed. So I said that I didn't think she had.

Friend then said that she had been facing away from the door and had heard the latch click and the door open and she assumed my dd was standing there, she pretended to be asleep (it was early) and then eventually realised that dd wasn't going to go away so turned round to say hello and there was no one there. She was a bit Shock about it! especially when dd came out of our room having just woken up and never having left her room.

We are going to see Tristan and Molly this October, visiting their new baby. They've been good friends since that night. I'm not looking forward to what he's found, he's a theatrical soul likes a build up but dh takes an odd disposition when we go. Hoping it will be fine this year, he really won't tell me anything. I know there's more to what happened with dh that night but he won't speak of it too me, he says he just can't.
We are staying for the entire October break with the kids we've never stayed that long before or taken the children, only a night since here and there since it happened 13 years ago this year.

Jumblebee · 20/08/2014 21:54

Ultra that is terrifying Shock

I have one (my only spooky experience) from a few years ago.

I was sleeping when I felt something blowing on my face. It was warm, as if someone actually was leaning right into my face and lightly blowing on me. I jolted awake but didn't see anything. My first thought was that I must have left my door open and the cat had snuck in and was exploring my face. But when I looked the door was closed! So I was lying there, petrified and afraid to move. Then I felt my bed moving, like someone had grabbed the bottom of the bed frame and was shaking it. It only lasted for a few seconds but it was awful. I'm not sure if I just imagined it but it took me ages to get back to sleep.

The next morning when I got up my dad said, in quite an annoyed voice, "did you sleep in the spare room last night?" (I sometimes did because it was cooler in there) and I said no. He said I must have because he heard the light switch being flicked on and off all the time (his room is right next to the spare bedroom) and I insisted that I had definitely slept in my own room! Then I told him about my spooky experience and he just shrugged Confused

I remember my dad once told me his own spooky story. It wasn't long after my mum left and they were going through a bad divorce. He was in a really bad place and struggling with two kids to look after and losing his wife. He woke up one night because he felt someone had just sat down at the bottom of his bed. When he looked he saw his gran exactly as he had remembered her. He adored her and said that her being there felt like a comfort to him, and that she was looking out for him. Makes me wish I had known her, she sounded like an amazing lady Smile

GalaxyInMyPants · 20/08/2014 22:37

Ultra, you're going back? Are you crazy?

0pheliaBalls · 20/08/2014 22:42

Shamelessly marking my place. No sodding WAY am I reading this at this time of night just before I go to bed but I'll be back in the morning. I'm such a wuss Grin

FruVikingessOla · 21/08/2014 08:28

That is terrifying, Ultra. Presumably you'll be staying in the main house with Tristan & Molly this time?

expatinscotland · 21/08/2014 08:41

You mean neither one of them will tell you what happened there, Ultra? That would drive me round the twist.

Ultracrepidarian · 21/08/2014 09:01

Tristan has told me it's pretty dark and chilling and there have been other odd incidents and I think it's easier to show us what he's found rather than tell us. If he wants to show us something I'm preparing myself for something inexplicable, the only other thing he would add was dh would understand. I don't think he wants to tell me, I think he wants to tell dh and in person. I don't mind Tristan has been researching the farm since that night over 13 years ago. They inherited the place in the mid 90s, it's a lovely place and I'm thinking he will have more than a phone or emails worth of history. It's not my place to know, dh than myself. I will let you know the findings in October it will be interesting to know what happened to dh, I do have a feeling dh had more happen that night but he won't say neither will Tristan.

expatinscotland · 21/08/2014 09:26

Why on Earth not? Cannot be any worse than that poster years ago who, with her then boyfriend, now husband, rented a terrace house so bad, more than one mate staying over left in the middle of the night and they finally moved when something scratched 'DIE' into a heavy internal door.
