I was back on board after two weeks but looking back I think that might have been a bit soon. My horse at the time wasn't particularly sofa-like though...

I've never had a section but I thought you weren't even supposed to drive for 6 weeks?

skihorse · 20/12/2009 00:53

I've not had a c-section, but I did have a tummy-tuck (which went badly wrong) - it took me nearly 10 weeks to get back in the saddle on to my safe horse. Yeh you're not supposed to drive... but who else is going to get in to town to get food?

My boss had a c-sec and was back in the saddle about 3-4wks afterwards but took it easy and she didn't have any complications from the c-sec. She drove at 4wks post too. She got the ok from her doctor and checked with her car insurance.

I've had 2 sections, the first 9 years ago and i didn't get back on for about 4 months (combination of prem baby and lunatic horse!), had my second 2 years ago and was back on after my 6 week check up.

Just go with how you feel and take it nice and easy to start with.

DW had C-section on 28th Feb and was back riding at Easter - can't remember the exact gap but she lost all her fitness/core strength and was amazingly hopeless for a very good rider.

I didn't ride for 10 months after my c-section, but I had some other complications too. Even if everything went really well next time I wouldn't dream of trying before 6 weeks.

I was on about 3 weeks after a emcs but was driving after a week and had healed stupidly quickly. I literally only walked my horse up and down the yard though.

Be careful after a c-section. I got back on after 5 weeks and realised that I could not ride at all, even though I had been riding for the previous 29 years! Horse looked after me well, but I felt very vulnerable and incompetent. All of your core muscles no longer work. My doctors told me I could officially ride again after 3 months. I celebrated this by going out on the hunt opening meet .

A horsey friend told me a gruesome story of a woman at her yard who got on only 2 weeks after her section and ruptured the scar. Not worth going into too much detail! On the other hand I know Suzanne Davies who famously had an elective c-section to make sure she could take part in a World Cup qualifier 2 weeks later - she won it! She is stark raving bonkers though, as far as I can tell.

You do get back into it though, and it isn't such a long time in the grand scheme of things. I would be inclined to take things slowly if I were to have another section, but would still expect to be fully back on board riding regularly after about 4 months. If you have withdrawal symptoms, there is always the lead rein ponies section of Horse Quest .

I couldn't last beyond 4 weeks after my first cs,before I was back on a horse but I had kept very fit through preganancy too and I had to get back on for my sanity!! I am very lucky in that I heal incredibly quickly, but I was back on board a lot sooner than that after my second cs...... Everyone heals at different rates though, defitintely go with what/how you feel - better to take your time and know that you're 100% fit & ready than to rush things and possibly do yourself some damage.
