Horse with Cough and cold

Hi folks, just having a winge really, just bought a lovely new 15.2hh Chestnut Cob, had him vetted, no problems. Got him home and within a week he is coughing with a snotty nostrils (white thick creamy colour).

Got vet out who said he has a cold, gave us antibiotics and ventupulin.

He lives out, we are soaking his hay. This was about 10 days ago that he was diagnosed but he is still coughing! Vet says just to keep resting him until the inflammation in his throat goes down.

Any supplements or things I can try to help him make a speedier recovery? Its so frustrating as I have this new horse who I can't ride, gah!

We wormed him and he had first jabs when we got him so wonder if that could have triggered matters.

Anyway, I am rambling.

I don't have any advice but masses of sympathy - it's awful when they're ill isn't it

Thanks Mitchy. I am HairyMuff back under my old name by the way. I had a TB before on loan, he had crap feet so I thought this time I'll get a nice sturdy strong cob. Silly me eh. Just so deperate to get him fit and ride!

Oh my goodness, I was going to post asking about you - I thought of it this morning but thought MitchyInge shouting 'HairyMuff' would be a bit much! Coincidence!

I was wondering whether you ever went to any shows in the end?

Well I had that TB on loan. I got him really fit, he was a fab jumper and was building up my confidence to do some shows. Then he had a few bouts of unexplained lameness. To cut a long story short his owner wanted me to buy him, before I did I got the vet out to check out this lameness - good job I did as he had arthritis beginning in front fetlock joints.

Nightmare summer really, had to take him back to his owner, looking a millions times better - would have been daft to buy him though knowing he had arthritis problems - proabably why he was retired from eventing.

So, ended up buying this lovely cob who now I can't ride as is coughing like an old tramp.

And I never got to go to any shows!

How is he Turkey, any better?

Well yesterday he was snotting and coughing worse than ever! Rang the vet and got another course of different antibiotics (strange liquid in brown bottle - looks like a Harry Potter potion). God knows what it'll cost, I dread to think - vet said she'd bill me.

I did some googling and found a good website called "natural horse supplies" and got some ecchinacea (Sp?) to try and boost his immune system.

Never mind, just want him to be better So I can take him out and show him the sights!

At least I have plenty of time to build up to go to shows next year - I am aiming for a working hunter class - oooh get me!

aw, was hoping he'd had have improved - maybe this magic potion will do the trick
