The tack room
hoof boots?

Any one use these, or have experience of using them?
I am thinking of trying some for pony who seems quite thin soled. He isnt shod, and dont intend to shoe him but he has to walk down an unmade road to get to decent hacking and he always walks quite gingerly over gravely bits.
If you have used them which brand did you go for and why?
So far swaying between old mac G2 and cavello as they look easiest.

hi ive used mac boots and they just came off whenever we went faster than a trot! so no use for me.... they were on a tb who had not enough wall left to nail into and the owner still wanted working..in fairness he really need the work.. in the end i just worked him through the foot sore stage..used keratex on his feet and linseed oil and he is still unshod now.. ive also used equiboots but found they gave heel abcesses very easly so dont go near them now (wont even poultice in the bloody things!)

We had the same problem with our young connemara - she didn't like walking down our gravelly tracks.
We didn't want to shoe her (and one judge wasn't happy that we did when showing her in-hand) but but felt it best to put light steels on, just in front.
Certainly allowed her to walk more freely and also the hoof ended up in better shape as it had been liable to damage before.

Hmm, def don't want something that falls off easily. Damned annoying thing is pony has fab feet to look at. No cracks, splits etc, just seems tender footed sometimes.
Might try keratex to try harden sole a little. He did actually seem much better today so maybe now land is drying out he may improve more.
Really loathe to shoe as he is basically a companion who my kids occasionally hack out, prob only once a week.

I used boa boots for my tb mare and we kept them on most of the time except once in deep mud and once galloping through thick long grass. I really liked them but no longer use them as her hooves have toughed up enough to go bare foot.
