Horse care courses

DD has become horse mad and has been riding now for a few years. The instructors are variable and she and I pick up bits and pieces but I’d like a structured course for me. I think eventually we will take the plunge and get her her own pony but not before I’m very comfortable doing the care. Does anyone know where I should look?

Most riding schools do horsemanship lessons to teach you about their care and handling.

Take a look at local agricultural colleges. They usually offer a variety of equine courses. Alternatively join the Pony Club. Loads of info readily available through them. Your daughter can also work her way up the tests and learn
as she goes.

I’m only finding full time courses where I’d need a day here or there or a weekend or nights.

The local stable DD rides at is fairly useless. We gain bits and pieces of knowledge but it’s all a bit haphazard and by luck!

Look for a pony club centre (not branch) for your daughter. And somewhere where you can do your BHS stage 1 - hopefully the same place

Give us a suitably vague idea of location and I reckon someone will live near enough for suggestions

@Lastqueenofscotland2 The one we are at is a centre…it doesn’t offer any of the tests and honestly the teaching is wildly patchy.

You might get what you need by helping out someone with horse care at a private stable. Mucking out, grooming, handling etc.
