Hay Bar / but for grass ?

Got a 34 year old welsh pony, he can no longer have haylage as he has 2 and a half chewing teeth, so he’s now on a mix of dried grass and short chopped hay.

Problem is it’s so messy, we gave up putting them in tub trugs on the floor as he likes to throw those around his bedroom and it became very expensive bedding. So we had now tied to tub trugs to the wall, which works for so long until he pulls them enough he breaks the handle.

Have look at hay bars but not sure if the grass and hay would just fall out ?

Has anybody ever seen anything suitable for short chopped forage ?

Don’t know about haybars but have you tried putting the tubtrugs in a tyre, or going up a couple of sizes and putting a very large rock at the bottom of them, or those flat sided water buckers that clip to the wall? Difficult problem.

Have you tried the large heavy duty rubber trugs with the thick handles rather than the normal ones.

Is the stable big enough to actually build a manger / trough type thing on the wall ? We have a 33 yr old Dartmoor x and she has surprisingly good teeth and has only lost 1 but she is on 4 feeds a day now as she does lose condition quite quickly .

Old cast iron piglet trough? The tyres are a good idea, but my determined fellow will flip them if the good feed is hiding under the chaff.

If you have a hay net with very small holes, maybe you could put the whole trig in it and secure it to a ring?

My Welshie has a hay bar - she has hay in it but I imagine it would work fine for grass too. The bottom of it is covered, so in theory nothing should fall through, but there are a few gaps, so a little hay dose escape sometimes.

Does he have a play alternative to throw around?
