Organising and identifying rugs

What are your best tips on organising and identifying rugs? Our tack room is a jumble of different sizes/weights etc. This morning as dd was flying out of the door she said ‘can you put Maggie’s lightweight on?’ Cue 20 minutes of me scratching my head trying to find the one she meant. So this weekend’s job is sorting out rugs - I need an easy way of seeing instantly what’s what so any suggestions gratefully received.

Mark them in large letters in indelible pen by the tail piece and again by the whither or neck what size and weight they are. Edited to say a rug rack makes it easier.

i have 3 that are the same size so i just write on them weight and who they belong to!

I just use something like this and write on the plastic with permanent marker.

Horse name
Rug weight (l/w, m/w etc)
Rug type (indoor/outdoor/fleece etc)

We call them the black one the green one and the checked one etc tbh!! I make sure each one ( weight ) and stable / turn out etc are all different colours for ease of identification!

Thank you! The colour system would be good if they weren’t all mud coloured after a few days 😬

I have mine hung on a broom handle in the stable. I can just grab what I need, when I need it. I don’t have much storage in the tack room though so it’s the best I can do

As someone who organised and maintained a rug room for 80 horses I will impart my wisdom!
The answer is storage - lots of shelves if you have the space. So each horse can have its own area with rugs ordered by weight and function.

I had a set of shelves per rug size and then ordered them top to bottom by weight. All neatly folded (put the rug on the floor, fold horizontally then fold front to back) and the shelves labled to save any confusion. You have to stay on top of it though and make sure no one is just shoving rugs back in 😂

I have shelves too, although not as nice as that! I have them in plastic zip up ikea bags - the orange and white ones. Write what they are on the outside and try to group like with like. I also have a list of all the rugs I have to keep track.

I put my rug weights on the straps on the chest or on the rug itself with perm marker. At retirement yard owner put large travel size tags that you wrote on with perm marker on the ring the fillet string sat on.

I also used to put my horses freezemark number on the rug and if it had no freezemark I'd make up one.
