I’m viewing a horse this week!

And I’m soooo excited, and terrified in equal measures, but I just wanted to tell someone.

Im 52 and have ridden on and off since I was a child, it’s been a lifelong dream to have my own horse and I thought to myself it’s now or never!

My dd has had a horse for a number of years which I’ve ridden a few times, but she’s far too advanced for me, and quite frankly, scares the shit out of me! So we’re an experienced family, but the weight of responsibility is weighing heavy on me, which is the terrifying bit.

I’ve been looking for a full loan but there doesn’t seem to be many about (even in this weather). So started to look to buy. I’ve found what looks to be what I’m after and I’m viewing on Thursday. My dd is coming with me, and she’ll tell me if he’s not suitable, and stop me making any rash decisions.

Im day dreaming of happy hacking to my hearts content, grooming and spending time with ‘my’
horse…. Ekkkkk

Enjoy!

Honeybee111 · 18/11/2025 00:05

Go at your own pace and enjoy! You have nothing to prove to anyone. Live that dream of yours!

Gremlinsateit · 18/11/2025 03:33

Exciting! Remember you are obliged to post a photo of your handsome hacker if your purchase is successful, so we can all admire him :)

Pleasedontdothat · 18/11/2025 06:56

Please get the horse vetted - it’s not a guarantee that there won’t be something wrong but it will give you some peace of mind. Good luck - I hope the viewing goes well

RedPony1 · 18/11/2025 08:27

Exciting!! good luck!

OnceIn · 18/11/2025 09:50

Thanks everyone. I’m a tad giddy as you can tell.

We did vetting when looking for my dd’s horse and 2 failed, and although it was expensive to do, it would have been nothing like the kissing spine and eyesight vet bills had she bought without having the vet check.

I know what you mean about going at my own pace, I no longer have anything to prove and just want to enjoy this as much as I can. I’m as happy pampering and spending time with my horse as I will be riding, infact it’s usually less stressful to pamper

And just think of all that wonderful shopping to be done. 😏

britnay · 19/11/2025 12:09

Depending on your height and weight, don't discount (cob type) ponies, especially if you just plan on hacking. Easier to get on and off. Easier and cheaper to keep, and generally stay sound.

Juliannaz · 19/11/2025 12:12

Remember to catch from the field, bring in, groom, tack up etc yourself. I’ve seen so many horses that have been sold where the owner turns up and they are tacked up, drugged up ans ready to go. Are you buying from a dealer?

tonyhawks23 · 19/11/2025 12:45

Ooo enjoy.watching with interest as one day hope to be in the same position!

KeepOnKeepingOn25 · 19/11/2025 12:56

Very exciting OP! Please post your progress, rooting for you he will be the one!

I have a similar dream but due to health problems probably won’t ever fulfill it, my dream would be a lovely sweet soppy old cob with hooves the size of dinner plates and groom their muddy coat to my hearts content 🥰

I’m only 5,3 and fairly lightweight so I’ve been looking at anything between 14 and 16 hands

I do love a good cob but they are so expensive now. I remember when they were peanuts, but I think because of the reasons you’ve put above, they have risen in price. I saw a lovely 6yr old and it was being advertised for £10000.

Thank you, this is what we did when buying my daughter’s horse.

yes it is via a dealer, I’ve been using the Dodgy Horse Dealers pages on Facebook to try and weed out the unscrupulous ones. But a friend gave me some sage advice once, and said ‘everyone lies when selling horses’ so I’ve been keeping that in mind. My dd knows her stuff so she’s coming with me and won’t be backwards at telling me if I’m making a mistake

How exciting! If it’s a dealer, arrive a bit early would be my advice.

I bought my mare 5 months ago and she is a complete dream and so good for my mental health.

Good luck!

DramaAlpaca · 19/11/2025 14:31

OP, I confess that I'm not much of a horsey person in that I love horses but I don't ride (DS used to, though, I've spent years hanging around stables) but I am so excited for you!

britnay · 19/11/2025 14:33

I'm the same height as you, and mine are 13.1 welshie and 13.3 irish cob :)

Same! My mare is 13.1 and I am hoping for another inch (she is 4) but it’s not forthcoming! I think I look ok though 😬

I hope it all goes well at the viewing.

OnceIn · 20/11/2025 18:27

Gutted! The horse I was going to view has been sold. Back to the drawing board

ForLoveNotMoney · 20/11/2025 22:00

Ahhh crap! It wasn’t meant to be! I feel horses find you. You’ll find yours soon.

FuzzyWolf · 20/11/2025 22:05

Oh no! That feels even worse than going and viewing and realising it wasn’t quite right.

Hopefully you’ll meet the right one soon.

Gremlinsateit · 21/11/2025 07:27

Oh, that just wasn’t your horse. Your horse is waiting for you :)

HomeTutor · 21/11/2025 07:31
