What to do with horse that’s had a fall

Dds pony jumped over her stable door today. She ended up in her back on the other side. There is no swelling or heat and just a small cut and she jumped up straight away and seemed fine in herself. Trotting up she seems a little sore on her hind. I’ve booked the physio and they are coming on Friday.so might give time for soreness to improve before seeing if she’s done any damage. Anything else I can be doing in the meantime time to get her on the mend? She isn’t usually prone to being so daft as to try and jump out. I think she thought she was on her own when she wasn’t and there was a really loud machinery noise. Thanks

Sounds like she's got away with it. I'd turn her out to keep her moving gently around as doesn't sound like box rest is indicated, and trot her up in the morning to see how she is. She might be a bit stiffer if she's bruised and the adrenaline has worn off, or she might be fine. But good to have a reference point. Dopey pony!

Turn her out to get her moving and to reduce inflammation.
Personally I wouldn't give any pain killers as you need to be able to tell if there is any damage.
Physio is good idea and she may need a follow up one too.

I had a gelding who was an absolute toe rag for jumping out of fields and once had a horrible fall flipping over a gate. Thankfully he was ok-ish, very sore for a few days… then about a week later I found him trotting around another field so he never learnt! Turn out, keep an eye on them, if she’s still unsound in a few days I’ll get a vet out to just have a Quick Look

Turnout in the field and work out how to stop it happening again 😀 I guess a weaving grill might work?

How is she doing @Titianshe ?

Titianshe · 14/08/2025 07:29

@tinyspiny she seems ok 🤞 no sign of obvious lameness from what I’ve seen in the field. She’s been turned out, had to go with the others because she wouldn’t settle in a paddock next to them 🙄 Physio comes tomorrow so shall see what she says. Thanks for asking

Hope it goes well tomorrow @Titianshe

Physio says she’s been lucky. Hypotonic through right side neck, shoulder and back. Particularly sensitive around the right scapula. Shes had a weeks rest and now she’s recommended getting back to consistent work. Grill being fitted to the top of the stable door today!! Thanks for everyone’s support
